"Compendium of Materia Medica" records that human urine (boy's urine) smells salty, is cold and non-toxic. It is mainly used to treat cold and heat headaches and warm the qi. Boys are especially good. Indeed, many ancient doctors used boys' urine as a medicine or directly used it as medicine to treat people's diseases. There is a record in the medical records of Zhu Zhenheng, a famous doctor in the Yuan Dynasty: "Urine (boy's urine) can reduce internal heat very quickly. It is common to see an old woman who is over eighty years old but looks like she is forty. When asked why,... people taught her to drink human urine. She has been doing this for more than forty years, and she is healthy and has no other illness... Anyone with yin deficiency, fire movement, and hot fever, who does not benefit from taking medicine, can only be cured by urine." There are many similar records in ancient medical records, such as using boy's urine to treat headaches, sore throats, abdominal pains, fevers, pulmonary tuberculosis, coughs, hemorrhoids and other symptoms. The usage includes drinking directly, drinking after boiling, drinking with medicine, drinking with wine, drinking with medicine, etc. There is also a practice in ancient times where people would let a boy sit on the abdomen and urinate in the navel when they encountered acute abdomen or heatstroke.

Regarding the principle of curing diseases with boy's urine, Li Shizhen said in Compendium of Materia Medica: "Urine is composed of "corpse" and "water", which is a metaphor. Prescriptionists call it "reincarnation wine" and "returning origin soup", which is also a code word." This means that children have pure yang bodies, representing infinite vitality and yang and original energy filling the whole body. Urine is produced by the warm yang energy in the kidneys. Although it is a metabolite, it still retains the true energy. However, the ancients did not use children's urine casually. There were still many requirements. For example, the urine should come from boys under 12 years old; boys should avoid eating five spicy and hot foods; boys should use girls' urine; girls should use boys' urine; and the head and tail of the children's urine should be cut off.

There is no practice of using children's urine for medicinal purposes in modern times, but there are some cases where people in extremely difficult situations drink urine to sustain life when they are out of water and food.
