What medicine is effective for frontal sinusitis

Frontal sinusitis is a very common nasal disease, which is divided into acute frontal sinusitis and chronic frontal sinusitis. Frontal sinusitis may be caused by sinus infection, nasal infection or blood infection. So what medicine is effective for frontal sinusitis? Generally, frontal sinusitis can be treated with anti-inflammatory treatment or local treatment. If the condition is serious, surgical treatment can also be performed. Penicillin antibiotics are the preferred medication.

Frontal sinusitis can be divided into acute frontal sinusitis and chronic frontal sinusitis. Acute frontal sinusitis is acute purulent sinusitis, which is an acute purulent infection of the sinus mucosa. If acute frontal sinusitis is not handled in time or is treated improperly, the mucosa will be severely damaged and lose its normal function, and it may become a chronic inflammation.

1. Causes

1. Sinus infection

The sinus openings are relatively small. Once narrowing or obstruction occurs, the ventilation and drainage of the sinus cavity will be affected and it will be easy to accumulate pus or develop into chronic inflammation. Moreover, the sinus openings and sinus walls are close to each other, so inflammation of one sinus can easily affect the adjacent sinuses.

2. Nasal infection

(1) Acute rhinitis: It is a common cause of sinusitis, probably because the continuity of the mucous membranes of the two facilitates the invasion of inflammation into the sinuses.

(2) Other nasal diseases: deviated nasal septum, hypertrophic nasal conchae, thickened mucosa, tumors and foreign bodies in the nasal cavity, and nasal allergies can all block the sinus openings, causing obstruction of sinus ventilation and drainage and inflammation.

(3) Pollutants enter the sinuses through the nasal cavity: improper swimming, diving, or snorkeling techniques, or blowing one’s nose forcefully after swimming, can cause sewage to enter the sinuses and cause inflammation. This type of infection is mostly caused by anaerobic bacteria, and the clinical symptoms are generally severe.

(4) The nasal packing is left in the nasal cavity for too long; local irritation and contamination, as well as obstruction of ventilation and drainage of the sinus opening lead to inflammation.

3. Adjacent tissue infection

4. Blood-borne infection

5. Traumatic infection

Trauma such as fractures, foreign bodies and blood clot infection; barotrauma is caused by sudden changes in air pressure, which is more common in the frontal and maxillary sinuses.

6. Systemic factors

Such as reduced immune function, diabetes, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, etc.

II. Treatment

1. General treatment

Get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and treat symptoms such as headaches accordingly.

2. Anti-inflammatory treatment

Penicillins should be used as the first choice and in sufficient doses. If allergy or drug resistance occurs, other broad-spectrum antibiotics should be used.

3. Local treatment

Nasal treatment includes nasal vasoconstrictors, antibiotic nasal drops, and nasal replacement surgery. Physical therapies such as ultrasonic atomization, steam inhalation, and local hot compress can be used.

4. Surgery

Surgery is not recommended during the acute phase. It is used when sinus inflammation spreads outward and causes serious complications to adjacent organs.

If there is no improvement after standardized acute treatment for more than one month or if the condition becomes chronic, surgical treatment can be performed. The purpose is to improve sinus ventilation and drainage and promote the disappearance of sinus inflammation. Auxiliary surgeries include correction of high nasal septum deflection, nasal polypectomy, partial resection of the middle turbinate, etc. Sinus surgery: It is divided into traditional radical sinus surgery and the currently widely used functional endoscopic sinus surgery.
