What causes bloodshot eyes?

Eye congestion refers to the dilation of blood vessels in the conjunctiva and sclera, causing bleeding, congestion, or congestion. There are many causes, the most common of which is bacterial infection. The more common ones include acute conjunctivitis, acute iridocyclitis, etc. In addition, keratitis can also often cause eye congestion. Of course, if you overuse your eyes and often stay up late, such symptoms may also occur.

What causes bloodshot eyes?

Eye bleeding, in addition to trauma, other eye diseases can also cause eye bleeding, mainly the following:

(1) Acute conjunctivitis

Cause: It is a common epidemic eye disease caused by bacterial and viral infection and is highly contagious. Symptoms: Acute onset, both eyes affected simultaneously or successively, the affected eye has stinging, itching, foreign body sensation, severe cases have photophobia and burning sensation, vision is generally not affected.

(2) Acute iridocyclitis

Cause: The causes of iris and ciliary body diseases are very complex, and most of them are unknown. They may be related to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism, tuberculosis, syphilis, viral infections, etc. Symptoms: ciliary congestion or mixed congestion, precipitates behind the cornea (abbreviated as KP), turbid aqueous humor, swollen iris, constricted or irregular pupil, slow light reflex, and posterior adhesion of part of the iris and lens; intraocular pressure is generally normal, but sometimes it may increase or decrease; decreased vision is accompanied by obvious photophobia, tearing, and pain, and the pain may radiate to the eyebrow arch, temporal region, and forehead .

(3) Keratitis

Cause: Most keratitis is caused by external infection. Minor corneal trauma is often the cause of infection, and common pathogens are bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. In addition, corneal immune dysfunction or malnutrition can cause keratitis. Physical symptoms: pain in the affected eye, foreign body sensation, blepharospasm, photophobia, tearing, sudden decrease in vision, etc. .

(4) Acute angle-closure glaucoma

Cause: The cause of the disease is relatively complicated. The incidence rate in women is 2 to 4 times that in men. It mostly occurs in middle-aged and elderly women. It is a binocular disease and has a certain relationship with genetics. It is mainly caused by the closure of the eye's chamber angle, obstruction of the aqueous humor outflow pathway, and increased intraocular pressure.

(5) Subconjunctival hemorrhage

Causes: Mostly due to hypertension, arteriosclerosis, poor coagulation function, local vascular inflammation or increased fragility, forced breath holding or trauma. Symptoms: Patients generally have no discomfort, but occasionally have mild soreness, which they often only notice accidentally or after being discovered by others.
