Does anemia cause nausea?

Anemia is a common disease, and there are many causes of anemia. When anemia occurs, it will manifest itself in a variety of symptoms depending on the severity of the disease. Some anemia patients will experience nausea. This is because anemia causes spleen and stomach disorders, leading to poor spleen and stomach function. In addition to nausea, the more common symptoms are fatigue and dizziness. In severe cases, it can cause low fever, etc.

Symptoms of anemia

Anemia refers to a common clinical symptom in which the red blood cell volume in the human body's peripheral blood is low and below the lower limit of the normal range. The more common symptoms of anemia are as follows:

1. General symptoms: Fatigue, drowsiness, and weakness are the most common and earliest symptoms of anemia. In severe cases, some patients may develop low fever.

2. Respiratory system: Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing is mostly caused by hypoxia or hypercapnia in the respiratory center.

3. Cardiovascular system: palpitations and shortness of breath are the most common. The patient has a tachycardia, and a soft systolic murmur can be heard at the apex or pulmonary valve area. A diastolic murmur can be heard in severe anemia. Severe anemia or pre-existing coronary heart disease can cause angina pectoris, heart enlargement, and heart failure.

4. Digestive system: loss of appetite, abdominal bloating, nausea, and constipation are the most common symptoms.

5. Reproductive system: Female patients often have menstrual disorders, such as amenorrhea or menorrhagia. Decreased libido is common in both men and women.

6. Central nervous system: dizziness, headache, tinnitus, blurred vision, inattention and drowsiness are common symptoms. Severe anemia may cause syncope, and elderly patients may experience confusion and mental abnormalities.

7. Urinary system: Patients with severe anemia may have mild proteinuria and reduced urine concentration function, manifested as nocturnal polyuria.

8. Others (but not limited to): dry skin, dry hair, and slow wound healing.

6 complications of severe anemia

In recent years, the number of people suffering from anemia has gradually increased, and many people do not take it seriously. But in fact, the problem of anemia should not be ignored. Let’s take a look at the following 6 complications that are common with severe anemia.

1. Anemia. Anemia is the first complication of aplastic anemia, which is caused by a decrease in red blood cells.

2. Bleeding. Some patients have thrombocytopenia and lack of other coagulation factors, which leads to bleeding tendency. Patients typically present with gingival and epistaxis, and skin petechiae and ecchymoses. Female patients may experience menstrual abnormalities and vaginal bleeding, and even internal bleeding, sometimes accompanied by dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and other adverse symptoms.

3. Mental abnormality. Vitamin B12 deficiency can not only cause peripheral neuritis, but in severe cases it can also cause mental abnormalities such as depression and excitement.

4. Rheumatoid arthritis. Studies have shown that rheumatoid arthritis patients with anemia are more likely to suffer from severe disease and are more likely to have joint involvement, loss of function and higher levels of pain, which are common complications of anemia.

5. Infection. Infection due to leukopenia in the patient's body is the most common complication of aplastic anemia. In the early stages, patients experience adverse symptoms such as weight loss, persistent fever, and loss of appetite. In severe cases, patients may develop systemic infections or even sepsis. Infections often aggravate bleeding and lead to death.

6. Heart failure. Severe anemia can easily lead to myocardial hypoxia and heart failure. In addition, the activation of myocardial energy sources requires the action of vitamin B12. Lack of vitamin B12 affects the activation of ATP, aggravates myocardial disorders, and promotes heart failure.
