What should I do if my skin becomes red, swollen and blistered after applying medicine?

Because many people will suffer from skin diseases in life, drug treatment is necessary. Of course, there are generally two types of medicines that can be used. The first type is oral medication, and the second type is external ointment. For example, if you have skin allergies, you can apply some anti-allergic topical ointments, which will be effective quickly. So the question is, what should I do if my skin becomes red, swollen and blistered after applying the medicine?

It may be an allergic reaction caused by drug stimulation. It is recommended to stop applying the Chinese medicine externally. Small blisters can be allowed to reabsorb on their own. For large blisters, puncture decompression can be considered. Continue to use the above-mentioned external medications for disinfection and pay attention to prevent infection.

1. If the blisters don’t hurt, just leave them as they are. Most blisters heal naturally and do not require draining. This is because the unbroken skin covering the blister forms a protective layer that prevents infection. After a few days, the body reabsorbs the fluid (called serum) from the blister and the blister disappears. This is the best option if the blisters are not painful, as it minimizes the risk of infection.

2. If the blister is on your hand or other part that is not easily rubbed, you can expose it directly because air helps healing. If it's on your foot, you may want to cover it with gauze or Velcro, which will protect the blister while still allowing it to breathe.

If the blister pops on its own, let the fluid drain, clean the area well, and then cover it with a dry, sterile bandage until it heals. This will heal and prevent infection.

3. If the blister causes pain, drain it. Although doctors recommend that you avoid popping blisters if possible, there are times when it may be necessary to dry a blister, especially if it's causing a lot of pain and pressure. For example, competitive runners may need to dry out large blisters on the soles of their feet if they have a race. If you need to drain a blister, it is very important to follow the correct procedure to avoid infection.
