What is the best medicine for typhoid fever?

When it comes to typhoid fever, many people are familiar with it. The incidence of this disease is also relatively high in life. When typhoid fever occurs, medication treatment should be carried out in time, and the treatment needs to be faster. For example, chloramphenicol can play a very good role in the treatment of typhoid fever. In addition, the third-generation cephalosporins also have a very good and powerful bactericidal effect. Of course, some Chinese patent medicines are also effective.

Western medicine for treating typhoid fever:

1. Chloramphenicol: Chloramphenicol can be used to treat non-resistant strains of typhoid fever. During the treatment, blood count should be checked twice a week. If the white blood cell count is <2.5×109/L, the drug should be discontinued and replaced with other antibacterial drugs. Patients with G-6PD deficiency may experience hemolysis after taking the drug. This medicine is ineffective against carriers. Use with caution in infants, children, and those with blood diseases, liver or kidney dysfunction. 2. Ampicillin: Its indications are: ① Patients who are resistant to chloramphenicol and other drugs; ② Patients who cannot use chloramphenicol; ③ Pregnancy complicated by typhoid fever; ④ Chronic carriers. The course of treatment should not be less than 2 weeks. The advantage of this drug is its high bile concentration.

3. Fluoroquinolones: broad antibacterial spectrum, strong bactericidal effect, complete oral absorption, wide distribution in the body, high bile concentration, few side effects, not easy to develop drug resistance, and are the first choice for the treatment of typhoid fever. Ofloxacin 300 mg, taken orally 2 to 3 times a day, or 200 mg, given by intravenous drip once every 8 to 12 hours; ciprofloxacin can also be used. The treatment course is 2 weeks. Children and pregnant women should use with caution or avoid use. 4. Third-generation cephalosporins: This type of antibiotics has strong bactericidal activity against Salmonella typhi. The concentration of some drugs in bile is extremely high and there are no obvious side effects. However, the drug is expensive and must be administered by injection. It is suitable for the elderly and infants, pregnant women with typhoid fever, highly drug-resistant severe typhoid fever, and those who cannot tolerate other drugs or have immunodeficiency. Commonly used drugs include cefoperazone sodium 2g, once every 12 hours; ceftriaxone 2-4g, once a day, and ceftriaxone sodium, etc. The course of treatment is 7-10 days. 5. Others: Amikacin and rifampicin can be used to treat typhoid fever caused by drug-resistant strains, but attention should be paid to their toxic side effects on the liver and kidneys.
