Side effects of mesenchymal stem cells

Side effects of mesenchymal stem cells

In recent decades, with the improvement of living standards, there have been great advances in science and technology and medical care, and more and more people have benefited from it. This is because many previously incurable diseases now have new solutions. Mesenchymal stem cells are the latest medical treatment and a new hope for curing many diseases. This regenerative medicine based on cell technology has brought good news to mankind. Let's take a look at what mesenchymal stem cells are and what side effects they have.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) are a type of early undifferentiated cells with the characteristics of self-renewal, self-replication, unlimited proliferation and multidirectional differentiation potential. They can secrete cytokines, reduce inflammation, reduce tissue cell apoptosis, promote the proliferation of stem progenitor cells of endogenous tissues and organs, and perform immune regulation, thereby acting as seed cells to repair tissues and organs. After continuous subculture and cryopreservation, they still have the potential for multidirectional differentiation and are called "universal cells" in the medical community.

Mesenchymal stem cell treatment indications:

①Hematological diseases: mainly leukemia, which is an area with earlier and more mature clinical applications;

② Nervous system diseases: such as Parkinson's syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, motor neuron disease, etc.;

③ Solid organ damage or pathology: such as liver cirrhosis and its complications, lung and other tissue fibrosis, etc.;

④ Immune system diseases: mainly using the immune regulation of stem cells, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.;

⑤ Cardiovascular system diseases: such as myocardial infarction, vascular disease, ischemic heart disease, etc.;

⑥ Metabolic diseases: such as diabetes and its complications;

⑦ Bone and joint diseases: such as osteoarthritis, femoral head necrosis, etc.;

⑧Reproductive system diseases: such as premature ovarian failure, endocrine disorders, etc.

⑨Other areas, such as corneal stem cell treatment of eye diseases, stem cell anti-aging, etc.

At present, stem cell research has completed a series of safety experiments, including toxicity tests, genetic tests, local irritation tests, fever tests and immunotoxicity tests. The results of tens of thousands of clinical trials have shown that stem cells are safe and non-toxic. ?

After multiple passaging, adult stem cells do not show any mutation, which means that they have no possibility of causing tumors. A large amount of clinical data also shows that except for a very small number of patients who have short-term, mild fever and headache (which can be relieved on their own after 2-3 hours), no other significant side effects or adverse reactions were found during stem cell treatment.
