Swollen tonsils in throat

Swollen tonsils in throat

As we all know, tonsils are normal nodules in the human body. Although everyone's physical condition is different, their size also varies to a certain extent. However, if your tonsils are swollen, it is an abnormal symptom. This symptom will have a great impact on the patient's body and mind. Clinically, enlarged tonsils are divided into three grades. So what are the differences between different levels of enlarged tonsils?

Adenoids is a condition in which the pharyngeal tonsils are abnormally enlarged. The pharyngeal tonsils are physiological tissues that grow in the back part of the human throat (the tube that connects the oral cavity, nasal cavity, esophagus and throat). This physiological tissue is called adenoid tissue. Tonsils are collections of lymphoid tissue in the pharynx. The "tonsils" generally referred to are the palatine tonsils, which are the largest of the lymphoid tissues gathered in the pharynx. Lymphatic tissue has the same function as lymph nodes; it filters bacteria and other microorganisms from lymph fluid. The lymphatic tissue in infants is relatively small, but it will gradually develop fully between the ages of three and five, and will shrink and disappear during puberty.

symptom

Symptoms of swollen tonsils. Sometimes the lymphatic tissue will enlarge (due to chronic inflammation or allergic reactions), and then swollen tonsils will appear. When tonsils are swollen, they will block the respiratory tract, causing sinusitis, otitis media, or causing stubborn coughs. People with swollen tonsils often have to breathe only through their mouths.

The onset of tonsillitis is very direct and can be confirmed by visual inspection of the condition of the tonsils. Ask the child to open his mouth wide and observe the changes in the tonsils and oropharynx to determine whether he has tonsillitis. However, in addition to diagnosing whether it is tonsillitis, another important task for doctors is to distinguish whether it is a bacterial infection or a viral infection, whether there is a systemic infection, and whether there will be other complications. Usually bacterial diseases may require antibiotics for treatment, while viral diseases do not require antibiotics. If necessary, blood tests can be done to help with diagnosis.

Severity

Is tonsillitis serious? Will there be any adverse sequelae? Basically, tonsillitis itself is a very benign disease, but the problem may lie in the pathogen itself, the severity of the infection and the strength of the body's resistance. If the pathogen only causes a local infection of the tonsils, the disease will be fine after the infection is over. However, some pathogens can have systemic effects, which may lead to a more complicated course of disease or adverse sequelae, such as arthritis, nephritis, myocarditis, endocarditis, etc.

Post-illness measures

Tonsillitis is contagious, so if a child has tonsillitis, he or she should try not to go out if possible. Children with severe symptoms should get more rest and drink adequate water. Some children have frequent and repeated infections, and their tonsils become larger than usual. Some people are born with larger tonsils, which become even larger after frequent infections. Sometimes it will affect breathing, or cause loud snoring while sleeping, and even affect the quality of sleep. You may consider a tonsillectomy.

Daily care for swollen tonsils:

1. Pay attention to rest, drink plenty of water, have a bowel movement, eat liquid or soft food, and pay attention to early infusion treatment when throat pain is obvious to prevent the spread of infection.

2. Children with tonsils should be given a liquid diet, eat less irritating food, eat more light food, and rinse their mouths after each meal.

3. When the disease recurs or is accompanied by corresponding symptoms, an electrocardiogram, urine or anti-O test can be performed during an acute attack to rule out the possibility of complications such as nephritis, myocarditis, arthritis, etc.

4. Pay attention to oral hygiene and drink more boiled water or fruit juice to replenish water in the body.

5. Patients with chronic tonsillitis should develop good living habits, ensure adequate sleep time, add or remove clothes in time with weather changes, and remove humid air indoors. These are all important. Sick children should develop good habits of not being picky about food and not overeating.

6. Keep exercising to improve the body's ability to resist disease. Do not overwork. If you feel tired, you should adjust and rest in time. Quitting smoking and drinking is an important step in preventing chronic tonsillitis.

7. Prevent all kinds of infectious diseases and epidemics, eat liquid or semi-liquid food, and use alcohol bath for those with high fever to help reduce the temperature.

8. Pay attention to improving dietary nutrition, strengthening physical fitness and improving body resistance.
