Symptoms of fungal intestinal infection

Symptoms of fungal intestinal infection

The name of intestinal fungal infection is fungal enteritis, which is mainly caused by Candida albicans. It often causes patients to have multiple symptoms repeatedly, such as diarrhea, yellow and watery stools, and bloody stools in severe cases. It often causes low fever, vomiting, and stomach pain. It has a great impact on health and should be treated with antibacterial treatment in time.

Symptoms of fungal intestinal infection

1. Candida enteritis

It is most common and occurs in children, especially malnourished or severely debilitated infants. The main symptoms are diarrhea, with 10 to 20 bowel movements a day, which are watery or tofu-like, with a lot of foam and a yellow-green color. It may be accompanied by abdominal distension, low fever, and even vomiting, but abdominal pain is rare. Iodine smears of stool specimens showed a large number of budding yeasts and hyphae, and most of the cultured yeasts were Candida albicans. Children often have thrush. Patients with underlying diseases often have a history of using broad-spectrum antibiotics before the onset of the disease.

2. Aspergillus enteritis

It is common in manual laborers with underlying diseases and is mostly caused by Aspergillus fumigatus. It is often secondary to pulmonary aspergillosis. The clinical manifestations of aspergillosis are mainly abdominal pain and bloody stools, which can cause massive gastrointestinal bleeding, while the diarrhea is often atypical and lacks the protracted course of candidal enteritis. It can easily develop into disseminated aspergillosis after invading blood vessels.

3. Mucor enteritis

It is caused by ingestion of food contaminated with fungal spores and is more common in malnourished children or patients with chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Its characteristic is the manifestation of mucosal ulcers or even perforation caused by vascular embolism, which is often accompanied by gastric infection and gastric ulcer. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting blood and black stools may occur, or intestinal perforation may lead to peritonitis, or invasion of gastrointestinal blood vessels may lead to hematogenous dissemination. The disease progresses rapidly and has a high mortality rate.

4. Histoplasma enteritis

It is endemic, mostly in people with AIDS or children, and is caused by inhalation or ingestion of spores from contaminated soil. The clinical course is similar to regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis. The onset is slow, with fever, indigestion, diarrhea, black stools, abdominal pain, and sometimes vomiting. It is often accompanied by lung infection foci, but enteritis is the main manifestation.

5. Paracoccidioides enteritis

Infection occurs secondary to lung infection or spread through the blood. It is mainly found in the central plateau of Brazil, and people who frequently come into contact with soil are more susceptible to this disease. The lesions are mostly in the ileocecal region, causing ulcerative granulomas with abscess formation. The pathogen can spread through the lymph nodes to local lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. The main symptoms are abdominal pain, a palpable mass in the right lower abdomen, accompanied by diarrhea and vomiting. It is often misdiagnosed as tuberculosis or tumor due to the presence of ascites and enlarged abdominal lymph nodes.

6. Diplodia enteritis

Similar to Candida albicans, Diplodia is an endogenous conditional pathogen. Dichloasma enteritis is more common in chronic patients with immunodeficiency and those who use immunosuppressants, antibiotics or corticosteroids. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody or mucous stools, which are similar to dysentery, but a large number of Diplodia and rectangular arthrospores can be found in the bloody and purulent stools. Patients often have oral geothripsis, which is similar to thrush.
