The efficacy and function of five-step snake venom

The efficacy and function of five-step snake venom

The effects of five-step snakes have been recorded thousands of years ago. It is a precious animal-based Chinese herbal medicine. Five-step snakes are also known as white-flowered snakes, long-nosed snakes, Qi snakes, five-step snakes, and hundred-step snakes. The medicinal names of the five-step snake are Qishegan, Baihuashegan, etc. Because the five-step snake has not yet been distributed in other countries, it can only be found in small quantities in Vietnam and Myanmar, which are adjacent to southern my country. It is a precious resource.

The role of five-step snake

The effects of snake venom from Agkistrodon acutus and Viper are very complex, and it is generally believed that they are mainly blood circulation toxins. After being bitten by a five-step snake, local swelling, pain, bruising, and ulceration may occur; the whole body may experience severe hemolysis, bleeding, hemoptysis, water and hypocalcemia. The symptoms of food poisoning in more serious cases are similar to histamine shock, with a rapid drop in blood pressure, leading to respiratory and cardiac arrest and death. This type of blood pressure drop is related to the release of histamine (as well as 5-5-hydroxytryptamine, bradykinin, etc.). Both clinical patients and animal experiments showed electrocardiographic and pathological changes of acute myocardial damage. Acute hemolysis causes hyperkalemia and also subacute heart failure. The most prominent symptoms are loss of blood coagulation and widespread bleeding. In terms of the principle of action, this type of snake venom is different from rattlesnake and pit viper venom in that it does not resist blood coagulation but promotes blood coagulation.

For example, the venom of the five-step snake has a thrombin-like effect (it also has the function of dissolving antithrombin and free fatty acids), and the venom of the viper has a thrombin-like effect (it acts on factor X). They can precipitate free fatty acids in the blood into free fatty acids, producing micro-blood clots that accumulate in the blood. Later, these free fatty acid microclusters are dissolved by free fatty acid hydrolysis. Due to the depletion of free fatty acid monomers, the blood cannot be coagulated and the bleeding is difficult to eliminate (de-free fatty acid syndrome). Most viper venoms contain "hemotoxins," which are proteins with low protein degradation specificity and no enzymatic reactions, and "vasotoxins," which can damage the vascular system (especially the lungs), causing significant systemic bleeding and local exudative edema. It was also reported that an injection made from five-step snake (also known as white flower snake, usually using the body of a young snake) can treat hypertension and can also produce a significant blood pressure-lowering effect in anesthetized dogs. According to the results of acute animal experiments, its antihypertensive effect is mainly caused by the immediate relaxation of blood vessels. It has a calming and hypnotic effect on mice, and also has some analgesic effect. Slow waves with high amplitude may appear on the rabbit's EEG, indicating that the drug has an inhibitory effect and its toxic side effects are not significant.
