In daily life, when we move heavy objects, in addition to using our arms to exert force, we also use our shoulders to exert force. The muscle strength of our shoulders can be increased through exercise. The shoulders can sometimes be in a pathological state because they have been bearing heavy loads for too long and because stress has been put on the shoulders during muscle strength training. For example, many people experience anterior shoulder pain. What is the specific cause?

When many of us do the barbell bench press exercise, after the exercise, we don't feel our chest muscles very clearly, but we feel our anterior deltoid muscles very clearly. In severe cases, there will be a slight pain in the anterior deltoid muscles.

Many of us may feel puzzled about this. The barbell bench press is clearly a training exercise for the chest muscles, but why does the anterior deltoid muscle of the shoulder hurt? Let’s analyze it for you. It can be roughly divided into the following three reasons.

1. The anterior deltoid muscle of the shoulder is too weak

First of all, we need to know that the barbell bench press is a compound movement. That is to say, when we do the barbell bench press, many of our joints and muscles will be involved in this movement, so the anterior deltoid muscle of our shoulder will be more or less involved. In other words, your anterior deltoid muscle will get some training during the flat barbell bench press.

However, the flat barbell bench press movement does not provide particularly strong stimulation to the anterior deltoid muscles of our shoulders. If we perform the movements very standardly and our shoulder deltoid muscles are relatively strong, we will not feel any pain in our shoulder deltoid muscles. In this case, if we want to reduce the pain in the anterior deltoid muscle when doing the barbell flat bench press, we can do some shoulder training exercises to strengthen our anterior deltoid muscle.

Second, the actions you perform are not standard enough

When we are doing fitness training, it is very important to perform the movements in standard. If the movements are not standard, many problems will be caused. For example, pain in the anterior deltoid when doing bench press is just a minor problem. In fitness training, there are some movements that, if not performed correctly, may cause us to be injured, and in serious cases, may cause sequelae to subsequent training.

Therefore, no matter what action we are doing, it is very important to learn the action well first and learn the standard. The reason why the anterior deltoid muscle of the shoulder hurts when we do the bench press is probably because our upper arms are too close to our torso, which causes excessive force on our shoulder deltoid muscle, leading to pain in the anterior deltoid muscle.
