The scientific name of facial paralysis is facial nerve paralysis, also known as facial neuritis, commonly known as "crooked mouth". It is an inflammation and paralysis of the facial nerve. It is characterized by motor dysfunction of the facial expression muscles, manifested as crooked mouth and eyes, inability to raise eyebrows, close eyes, puff cheeks, or purse lips. So what are the causes? Causes of facial nerve paralysis 1. The facial nerve branches below the stylomastoid foramen are affected. The forehead wrinkles on the affected side disappear, the eyebrows cannot be raised, the palpebral fissure becomes larger and cannot be closed or closes incompletely, Bell's sign occurs (the eyeball rotates upward and outward when the eyes are closed, revealing the white sclera), the nasolabial groove becomes shallow, the corners of the mouth droop, and the corners of the mouth deviate to the healthy side when showing the teeth. There is air leakage when puffing out the cheeks and whistling, and food is often retained between the teeth and cheeks on the affected side. 2. Damage to the facial nerve. When the facial nerve branches above the chorda tympani are affected, in addition to peripheral facial nerve paralysis, taste disorders in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue on the same side also occur. 3. The disease causes nerve involvement. When the facial nerve branches above the stapedius muscle are affected, hyperacusis, taste disturbance in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue on the same side, and peripheral facial nerve paralysis occur. 4. The geniculate ganglion is affected. In addition to hyperacusis, taste disturbance in the anterior 2/3 of the tongue on the same side and peripheral facial nerve paralysis, there is also pain in the mastoid area of the affected side, decreased sensation in the auricle and external auditory canal, and herpes in the external auditory canal or tympanic membrane, which is called Hunt's syndrome. Facial nerve paralysis is very harmful and even life-threatening if it is not cured for a long time (1) Long-term facial nerve paralysis is prone to complications: Patients with facial nerve paralysis should pay attention. The harm of facial nerve paralysis will cause related lesions in the body. The liver, kidney, internal organs function, and microcirculation system will be affected. Over time, it will lead to brain, kidney, and internal organs failure, qi and blood deficiency, yin and yang imbalance, anemia, insomnia, depression, facial muscle contracture, synkinesis, facial muscle spasm, ptosis, mental illness and other diseases, which will endanger human health and life, and the consequences are disastrous. (2) Leading to mental depression and low mood: The harm of facial nerve paralysis will cause the patient to become mentally depressed and often feel tired. He may even lose interest in anything, become decadent, and lose confidence in life. (3) Inferiority complex and autistic temperament: When a person suffers from facial nerve paralysis, sequelae of facial nerve paralysis, or hemifacial spasm, his personality will become increasingly inferior and his temperament will become increasingly autistic. He will be unwilling to interact with anyone, and will act on his own and make his own decisions, which will lead to frequent mistakes and lifelong regrets. These are all caused by the harm of facial nerve paralysis. |
