Things to note after lumbar spine surgery

A normal person usually has five lumbar vertebrae. Since the lumbar vertebra is a large joint bone in the human body, it is used very frequently, which makes it easy for the lumbar vertebra to develop lumbar problems. Because lumbar spondylosis has a great impact on people's daily life and often causes pain, some people choose to undergo lumbar spondylosis surgery. So what should people pay attention to after undergoing lumbar spondylosis surgery?

1. After the operation, the patient needs to choose a hard bed to rest in bed. He must stay in bed absolutely for the first week and do passive straight leg raising exercises within the limit of tolerance to protect the nerve roots from adhesion. The patient should still rest in bed as much as possible for 2-4 weeks after the stitches are removed, but he or she can get up to eat and urinate. The time should not exceed 3 hours, and he or she should avoid bending over and sitting (the patient's bed rest time should also be determined based on his or her age, physical condition, and the extent of tissue resection).

2. Within 1 week after surgery, the patient should be assisted by a nursing staff to turn over, and should not turn over forcefully by himself to ensure good healing of the lumbar fascia, muscles, and ligaments. After one month of bed rest, the patient can get up and do light activities with the protection of a waist belt. If bone grafting is performed during the operation, a plaster vest should be used to fix it for 3 to 4 months, and then get up and do activities after the bone graft has completely healed.

3. During the postoperative recovery period, patients should gradually strengthen the strength of the waist and back muscles and pay attention to correcting bad postures, and pay attention to self-protection of waist and back activities to prevent recurrence of the disease.

4. After the operation, mental workers can gradually resume work after 2 to 3 months, while physical workers can start working after 3 to 4 months. It takes half a year to truly resume physical labor. Work should be done from light to heavy, working time from short to long, and avoid intense bending and weight-bearing activities.

You can eat after the operation, mainly vegetables and fruits, and drink more fresh fruit juice. Pay attention to protein supplementation, it is best to choose milk, egg yolk, yogurt, etc. Drink less tea and coffee. If too much blood is lost during the operation, it is appropriate to add some animal liver, blood products, tofu, etc. to the diet of the patient with lumbar disc herniation. Eat small, frequent meals.
