How do ankle cysts form?

Many people don’t know what ankle cysts are. It is a cystic species that grows near the tendon sheath or ankle joint capsule. This disease has no clear cause yet, but it should be related to frequent movements. For example, women who often wear high heels are prone to ankle cysts. Currently, both traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine have very effective treatments for this disease. This article introduces them in detail. Let’s take a look.

What is an ankle cyst

A ganglion cyst (ankle cyst) is a cystic growth that occurs near a tendon sheath or joint capsule. The outer layer of the cyst wall is composed of fibrous tissue, the inner layer is covered with white and smooth endothelium, and there is thick mucus-like substance in the cyst. Cysts can be divided into unilocular and multilocular, with unilocular cysts being more common.

Causes of ankle cysts

The cause of this disease is not yet fully understood, but it is often related to trauma or certain regular movements. It is more common in young and middle-aged people, especially women. Most of the cysts are located on the back of the wrist, the dorsum of the foot, the armpits, etc. The cysts are round or oval smooth lumps that grow slowly. At the beginning, the cysts are soft and have a slight fluctuation when pressed. After a long time, there will be slight discomfort during exercise.

Ganglion cysts usually do not require treatment and will disappear on their own. Some patients can undergo cyst puncture, first use an empty syringe to aspirate the fluid in the cyst, and then inject an appropriate amount of glucocorticoids. Most patients can be cured after treatment. If the cyst is large or the above treatment is ineffective, or if it recurs, it can be removed surgically.

The most effective treatment for ankle cysts

1. Western medicine treatment

Puncture and fluid extraction

After local anesthesia, puncture is performed with a thicker needle, and after the cyst fluid is extracted, adrenal cortical hormone or hyaluronidase is injected, and then pressure bandage is applied. Hormone drugs can have side effects on the body.

Surgery

After local anesthesia, the cyst on the affected part of the instep is removed. Applying pressure bandage after the operation will cause trauma to the wrist or ankle, and the recovery period is long. It usually takes more than a month to resume normal activities.

2. Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatment

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that tendon ganglion cysts belong to the category of "tendon knots", "tendon gatherings" and "tendon tumors". They are caused by trauma to the fascia, where evil qi resides, causing stagnation and poor metabolism, qi and blood stagnation, blood failure to nourish the tendons, and condensation of phlegm and blood stasis. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the treatment of this disease requires

Guiqin Huoluo Patch is a traditional Chinese medicine. It is safe and painless in treatment, does not cause infection, and does not affect the appearance of the skin. It starts from the dialectical analysis of traditional Chinese medicine. It is mostly caused by excessive activity of the affected joints, repeated weight-bearing, prolonged standing, etc., which injure the meridians and tendons, resulting in poor circulation of Qi and fluid, and accumulation of water in the joints and meridians.

Acupuncture

Use an acupuncture needle to penetrate the cyst wall. After removing the needle, use the instep of the foot to apply pressure and massage the cyst to squeeze out the cyst fluid, flatten the cyst and heal it. It has certain efficacy, but recurrence is possible after treatment.
