Can thyroid cause coughing?

The thyroid gland is a very important endocrine organ in the mammalian body. If there is a problem with the thyroid gland, it will directly affect a person's endocrine system. However, thyroid cysts have occurred in many people, and after the occurrence of thyroid cysts, there are no particularly obvious symptoms in the human body. Therefore, some people can only check for foreign objects under their necks. So after a thyroid cyst occurs, will it cause a cough?

The thyroid gland can move up and down with the throat when swallowing. Therefore, when the thyroid gland is enlarged and accompanied by coughing, many people will wonder: Can thyroid nodules cause coughing? How should the cough caused by this be treated?

Thyroid nodules generally do not cause functional changes, and the patient's basal metabolic rate is normal. A small number of patients may develop secondary hyperthyroidism. However, when the nodule is large, it compresses the recurrent laryngeal nerve, causing discomfort in the throat and leading to coughing. Or the nodule compresses from one side, causing the trachea to shift or bend to the other side; compresses from both sides, causing tracheal stenosis, which can also lead to difficulty breathing and coughing, especially when the goiter is behind the sternum. Long-term pressure on the tracheal wall can cause tracheal softening and lead to suffocation. The scar reaction process after thyroid surgery will shrink, pulling the trachea near the wound, causing a pulling sensation when swallowing, and even irritating the trachea and causing coughing.

From the above, we can see that thyroid nodules can cause coughing. The key is how to treat this cough?

1. Surgical treatment: remove the nodule and relieve its pressure on the recurrent laryngeal nerve and trachea.

2. Thyroid hormone suppression therapy can shrink nodules, eliminate swelling, and reduce pressure on nodules, thereby alleviating the cough caused by them.

3. Drink plenty of water every day, exercise moderately, pay attention to eating habits, avoid spicy and irritating foods, and try to eat light food.

Thyroid nodules can cause coughing, and the main treatment method is to "cure the root cause" - treating the thyroid nodules, but it is also possible to "cure the symptoms" first and then "cure the root cause" through medication or diet.
