The dangers of mydriasis in children

Mydriasis is a means of adjusting the eyes, and can also be used to treat eye diseases such as pseudomyopia and strabismus. Mydriasis is very common among children. After mydriasis, the child's eyes will feel very uncomfortable for a period of time, and some patients will also have blurred vision. Parents need to pay attention in time. Some parents worry that mydriasis is bad for their children's eyes. So, what are the dangers of mydriasis?

The dangers of mydriasis

Are the dangers of mydriasis real? Many parents worry that mydriasis will affect their children's vision before doing it. First of all, there is no scientific basis for the claim that mydriasis is harmful. On the contrary, it is precisely because of mydriasis that the patient's degree can be measured more accurately.

First, dilated pupils can be fully restored, so there is no need to worry that dilated pupils will have an adverse effect on vision.

Second, mydriasis is not only a means of regulation: it can adjust the ciliary body, thereby eliminating the possibility of pseudomyopia; it is also a means of treatment. Mydriasis can effectively treat pseudomyopia and accommodative esotropia.

Third, the pupil cannot be dilated in the following situations.

1. Glaucoma patients cannot dilate their pupils, which can easily cause acute glaucoma attacks.

2. For patients suspected of having glaucoma, if they are found to have a shallow anterior chamber and high intraocular pressure, it is best not to dilate the pupil.

3. Teenagers generally need to dilate their pupils before eye examination. If the patient is over 40 years old, there is no need to dilate the pupils because the regulatory ability of the ciliary body has weakened.

Precautions after mydriasis

What are the precautions after mydriasis? Mydriasis will temporarily paralyze the ciliary body in the eye. After mydriasis, the symptoms of paralysis may continue. After mydriasis, you need to pay attention to the following points:

1. During the period of mydriasis, your close-range vision will gradually recover. During this stage, you should avoid any strong light exposure, especially the stimulation of sunlight. If you are going to do outdoor activities, it is best to wear a sun hat or sunglasses.

2. Before the mydriasis has fully recovered, avoid using your eyes, such as reading, watching TV, and using the computer.

3. During the mydriasis period, there will be varying degrees of blurred vision or blurred eyesight. If there is no obvious discomfort, it is still a normal phenomenon. If you feel something is wrong, you should go to the hospital immediately to avoid delaying the disease.

4. During mydriasis, some changes in facial complexion or physical discomfort may occur, such as red face, headache and fever, constipation and nausea, visual hallucinations and excitement, edema and nausea. These symptoms may be adverse reactions to atropine. You should stop taking the medicine immediately and ask a doctor.

5. Even if you stop taking the medication, it will take about three weeks for the pupil to recover. During this period, you need to pay attention to your eyes and avoid eye fatigue.
