Do you use anesthesia during puncture?

The puncture is a surgical procedure in which a very small needle is inserted into the area to be examined, and then the substances needed for examination are extracted. The pain is relatively low, lower than the pain of drawing blood, and generally no anesthetic is required. Therefore, for the puncture operation, just bear with it. Generally, there will be no pain. The main thing is to pay attention to the surgical care of the puncture.

Does amniocentesis require anesthesia?

Although the needle used for amniocentesis is relatively long (about 10 cm), its diameter is very small, thinner than the needle used for general blood drawing. In addition, the nerve distribution in the belly of pregnant women is sparse, so they are less sensitive to the feeling of needle prick. Generally speaking, amniocentesis is at most as painful as drawing blood, so no local anesthesia is required. Because even if you need anesthesia, it will still hurt when you get the first shot. Therefore, local anesthesia is unnecessary and may even increase the risk of drug allergy or infection.

Generally, you don't need to fast for amniocentesis, but it's best to go in the morning, because the puncture cannot be done immediately after registration. Some examinations are needed, such as measuring body temperature, listening to fetal heart rate, B-ultrasound, etc., to determine the position of the placenta, fetal condition, amniotic fluid condition, etc. After the examination, a decision can be made whether to perform a puncture. The steps for amniocentesis are as follows: Pregnant women with indications should first undergo B-ultrasound to determine the position of the placenta, the condition of the fetus, and to avoid accidental injury to the placenta. After selecting the insertion point, disinfect the skin, spread a disinfectant towel, perform local anesthesia, and use a lumbar puncture needle with a needle core to pierce the selected point vertically. When the needle passes through the abdominal wall and uterine wall, there will be two empty sensations, and the needle core should be removed. Use a 2 ml syringe to draw out 2 ml of amniotic fluid and discard it. This portion of amniotic fluid is clearly likely to contain maternal cells. Use a 20 ml empty needle to draw out 20 ml of amniotic fluid, place them in 2 sterile test tubes and cover them. Remove the needle, cover with sterile gauze, apply pressure for one minute, and let the pregnant woman rest in bed for 2 hours.

Why do you need amniocentesis?

Amniocentesis is done to screen for chromosomal abnormalities in order to reduce the birth of retarded and mentally retarded children. Generally speaking, amniocentesis is recommended for high-risk pregnant women over the age of 35. Amniocentesis is not mandatory, but doctors recommend it for the health of the next generation. People who are under 35 years old but are found to have high-risk factors after intravenous Down syndrome screening should also undergo amniocentesis for safety reasons.

In addition, pregnant women who have given birth to a child with chromosomal abnormalities must undergo amniocentesis. For pregnant women who have been exposed to toxic substances or radiation during pregnancy, the fetus may be adversely affected, so amniocentesis has to be done.
