Can I use an IUD during breastfeeding?

As we all know, when women are breastfeeding, they should pay attention to their diet and physical health, because at this time, the woman's own body is still related to the baby. If the woman herself has a disease, the baby is likely to be infected during breastfeeding. In order to avoid pregnancy, some women will wear an IUD during breastfeeding. So, can IUD be used during breastfeeding?

In our country, nearly half of women use IUDs for contraception after giving birth.

The intrauterine device is a relatively safe, easy-to-use and permanent method of contraception. In our country, nearly half of women use intrauterine devices for contraception. Women who are still breastfeeding six months after delivery may consider having an intrauterine device inserted. At present, in addition to metal single ring and copper V-ring, there are also intrauterine devices that can release progesterone and hemostatic drugs. The latter can significantly reduce bleeding and pain while increasing the contraceptive effect. The contraceptive effect of an intrauterine device can last for 5 to 10 years.

Time to place the contraceptive ring: Intrauterine device placement is a common and economical contraceptive method. It can usually be placed 3 months after a normal delivery or more than half a year after a cesarean section, if the breastfeeding woman is confirmed not to be pregnant. This contraceptive method has good contraceptive effects. It can prevent pregnancy for several years once inserted, does not affect sex life, and there is no need to remember it every day. Of course, it also has some disadvantages, such as it must be placed by a doctor, can cause abdominal pain, irregular vaginal bleeding, excessive menstruation, and can easily lead to inflammation. Moreover, placing it does not mean you can "put it away once and for all" or "rest assured". If you want to have an IUD inserted during breastfeeding, it is best to do it after your period. Generally speaking, the insertion of the IUD will not affect the mother's breastfeeding. However, if an infection occurs after the insertion, you will need to take anti-inflammatory drugs and you should temporarily stop breastfeeding.

The best time to insert the IUD is within 7 days after the end of menstruation. At this time, it can be confirmed that the woman is not pregnant, and the endometrium is relatively thin, so the chance of bleeding and infection after the IUD is inserted is less. For those who are in normal condition six months after cesarean section, the IUD can be inserted after the placenta is delivered. For emergency contraception, the IUD is inserted within 5 days after unprotected intercourse.

Generally speaking, an intrauterine contraceptive device can be inserted more than three months after a normal birth. However, it should be noted that if this time is the breastfeeding period, although there is no menstruation, there is still a possibility of pregnancy, which is what people usually call hidden pregnancy. Therefore, women who have not had menstruation after delivery should first ask a doctor to check whether they are pregnant. Only when it is confirmed that they are not pregnant can the IUD be inserted.
