What is cortical hyperplasia?

I believe everyone has heard of cortical hyperplasia. This disease is related to our adrenal glands, or in layman's terms, it is an adrenal gland disease. I believe that everyone has only heard of it but has no relevant understanding of cortical thickening. The editor has collected some relevant information for you. Let’s take a look at what cortical thickening is.

Adrenal hyperplasia is also known as adrenogenital syndrome or adrenal hyperplasia. It is mainly due to defects in the enzymes necessary for the biosynthesis of adrenal cortical hormones, resulting in abnormal synthesis of corticosteroids. In most cases, the adrenal glands secrete insufficient glucose-regulating hormones and salt-regulating hormones but excessive androgens, resulting in varying degrees of adrenal cortical insufficiency clinically, accompanied by masculinization in girls and precocious puberty in boys. In addition, there may be various syndromes such as hyponatremia or hypertension.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by enzyme defects in the adrenal cortical hormone synthesis pathway, mainly caused by 21-hydroxylase deficiency. Clinical manifestations include hypertension, hyperkalemia, hypokalemia, hypovolemia, etc. Female patients may experience masculinization and clitoral hypertrophy and other symptoms of excess androgen around puberty. The purpose of treatment is to correct the symptoms caused by adrenal cortex insufficiency and maintain normal metabolic function of the body. At the same time, it is necessary to inhibit hyperandrogenism, promote puberty development, and reduce the damage to adult height. External genitalia plastic surgery is also required, and it should be performed as early as possible after puberty to create good living and reproductive conditions for patients into adulthood.

The most important thing is corticosteroid replacement therapy, which requires lifelong treatment, and the effectiveness depends on the severity of the lesion and the time of starting treatment. Genetic diseases are difficult to cure, and the disease-causing genes should be detected through pre-pregnancy genetic testing, and efforts should be made to avoid passing the disease-causing genes to offspring.
