Chronic keratitis

Chronic keratitis

For people, eyes are a medium for viewing the beautiful world and a window to the soul. Many people know that there is a cornea outside the eye. However, due to current life and work reasons, many people use their eyes without restraint, which can easily lead to the occurrence of chronic keratitis. How much do you know about chronic keratitis? Only by understanding it can you better protect your eyes.

Chronic keratitis can actually cause great damage to the eyes, but as long as you receive treatment and slowly adjust your body, you will recover quickly. It is also best to correct your lifestyle habits.

Chronic keratitis is divided into ulcerative keratitis and non-ulcerative keratitis. Ulcerative keratitis is also known as corneal ulcer, and non-ulcerative keratitis is divided into two categories: deep keratitis. Inflammation caused by corneal trauma, bacteria and viruses invading the cornea. The affected eye may feel a foreign body sensation, stinging or even burning. There is mixed congestion on the surface of the conjunctiva, accompanied by symptoms such as photophobia, tearing, visual impairment and increased secretions. The corneal surface is infiltrated and ulcers are formed.

Causes

The causes of chronic keratitis include both internal and external factors:

1. External factors: Most corneal infections caused by external factors must meet two conditions:

a. Damage and shedding of corneal epithelial cells.

b. Simultaneous infection. Infectious corneal ulcers are likely to occur only when both of these conditions are met.

2. Endogenous factors: refers to endogenous diseases coming from the whole body.

The cornea has no blood vessels, so acute infectious diseases are less likely to invade the cornea. However, corneal tissue participates in the systemic immune response, although the degree of its immune response is lower than that of other tissues. But precisely because it has no blood vessels and has a slower metabolism, the immune response changes are long-lasting. The cornea is in a sensitive state for a long time, making it easy to develop allergic diseases such as bullous keratitis.

3. Caused by spread from adjacent tissues Due to embryological homology and anatomical continuity, diseases that spread to the corneal epithelium mostly come from the conjunctiva. For example, severe conjunctivitis is often accompanied by superficial keratitis.

Ulcerative keratitis, also known as corneal ulcer, is mostly caused by exogenous factors, that is, infectious pathogens invade the corneal epithelial cell layer from the outside and cause inflammation.

Course of disease: When inflammation first occurs, there are more or less irritants and motile cells infiltrating the corneal tissue. At the same time, the corneal tissue is filled with fluid, so the affected area swells and becomes turbid, sometimes even protruding above the surface. This is the so-called corneal infiltration stage.

Corneal infiltration: The main symptoms are gray-yellow turbidity, darkness, dullness, and protrusions above the corneal surface.

The above is the information about chronic keratitis. I believe it can arouse everyone’s vigilance. Eyes are the channel through which we see the colorful world, but they are also very fragile. If the damage to the eyes cannot be restored, it may lead to blindness, which means you will not be able to see what the outside world is like.
