What is dysentery?

As the name suggests, dysentery is a physical disease. This disease is most likely to occur in summer and autumn. The symptoms of this disease are mostly manifested as convulsions, pale face, weak and cold limbs, accompanied by vomiting and abdominal pain. The cause of this disease may be eating overnight food or unclean food, and it most often occurs in children.

If everyone understands the causes of dysentery, it will be easy to control the occurrence of this disease. Just remember to wash raw foods such as fruits before eating them. If you cannot finish the cooked food on the same day, do not leave it for consumption the next day.

Dysentery, known as intestinal stagnation and constipation in ancient times. It is one of the acute intestinal infectious diseases. The main clinical symptoms are fever, abdominal pain, tenesmus, and bloody stools. If infected with an epidemic toxin, the disease will develop rapidly, accompanied by sudden high fever, coma, and convulsions, which is epidemic toxin dysentery. When dysentery first occurs, abdominal pain occurs first, followed by diarrhea, which may occur several times to dozens of times a day and night. It often occurs in summer and autumn, caused by dampness and heat, which damage the spleen and stomach, causing the spleen to lose its healthy function and the stomach to lose its digestive function, and also causing stagnation and brewing in the intestines.

Historical records

Dysentery, disease name. See "Ji Sheng Fang". Before the Song Dynasty, there were names such as intestinal diarrhea, red and white diarrhea, hot diarrhea, dysentery, dysentery (or "dysentery"), and constipation. Volume 3 of "Yi Ji" states: "Dysentery is caused by damp heat, or by eating damp and hot foods, or by being exposed to damp and hot air, which accumulates in the intestines and stomach, and the spleen and stomach function abnormally. As a result, food and drink become increasingly stagnant, turning into turbid food, sticking to the intestines and stomach, and the functioning of the intestines becomes increasingly unfavorable. Qi stagnation turns into fire, which mixes with the damp and hot air to become evil, attacking and causing pain..." There are symptoms such as frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea, red, white, sticky and frozen diarrhea, and tenesmus.

Later generations pointed out more clearly that dysentery is mostly caused by unclean diet, exposure to epidemic poisonous air, which causes intestinal stagnation and abnormal conduction, and that it should be treated accordingly based on the deficiency and excess of the disease. As for the red, white, sticky and frozen substances discharged by dysentery, "The red ones are caused by injury in the blood, which belongs to the small intestine; the white ones are caused by injury in the qi, which belongs to the large intestine." "Ming Yi Zhi Zhang" says: "The accumulation of dampness and heat will turn red if it dries in the blood, and will turn white if it dries in the qi." Clinically, the treatment for actual symptoms is to clear away heat and dampness, cool blood and detoxify, and eliminate accumulation and relieve stagnation. For those with strong evil and weak body, it is advisable to eliminate the evil and strengthen the body, and use blood circulation and Qi regulation at the same time. This is what is meant by "if blood circulation occurs, pus in the stool will heal itself, and if Qi is regulated, the heaviness in the lower back will disappear by itself." For deficiency syndrome, one should tonify the middle and replenish Qi, warm the Yang and consolidate.

Dysentery can be divided into many types. According to different causes and symptoms (including the severity of symptoms, the course of disease and the color of diarrhea), there are roughly summer dysentery, damp-heat dysentery, wind dysentery, epidemic dysentery, gas dysentery, toxic dysentery, hot dysentery, cold dysentery, mute dysentery, chronic dysentery, intermittent dysentery, strange and constant dysentery, red dysentery, white dysentery, red and white dysentery, and five-color dysentery. The dysentery mentioned in traditional Chinese medicine is equivalent to dysentery in modern medicine, and also includes amoebic dysentery, ulcerative colitis, allergic colitis and some other diseases of intestinal transit and absorption dysfunction caused by intestinal infection and poisoning.

In fact, many diseases are caused by eating inappropriately. There is some truth in the saying that words come out of the mouth and diseases come into the mouth. In addition, bad habits in life can easily make the body sick. Therefore, for the sake of physical health, we must pay attention to every little detail in our daily life, pay attention to hygiene, exercise more, and avoid overeating to avoid getting sick easily.
