(1) Isolation and disinfection

Isolation and disinfection

If a child is found to have whooping cough, he or she should be isolated immediately. The isolation period is 6 weeks from the date of onset of the disease.

(2) Cough care

① Keep the air in the room fresh. Do not smoke or cook in the house. Avoid dust and bad odors to avoid irritating the sick child to have spasms and coughs. Take the sick child outdoors often to breathe fresh air and bask in the sun, but be sure to dress and wrap the sick child well to prevent him from catching a cold.

② Be patient with sick children, reduce their crying and mood swings, and divert their attention by telling stories, playing interesting games, and using toys to tease them, which can reduce the number of spasmodic coughs.

③ When the child has a cough spasm, help him lie on his side or sit up, pat his back, press his abdomen or use a belly belt to wrap his abdomen to relieve abdominal pain caused by the expansion of the abdominal muscles and help expel phlegm.

As the saying goes, "Three parts treatment, seven parts care." This is also true for children with whooping cough. So how should we care for children with whooping cough? Let's take a look!

For whooping cough, if the child is properly cared for, the child will recover quickly; otherwise, it may lead to serious complications and endanger life. Although some children have survived the critical period, they will be left with sequelae that are difficult to disappear. Therefore, patient and scientific care is particularly important. In the care of whooping cough, we should take the following measures:

(1) If a child with pertussis is found, he or she should be isolated for 4 to 6 weeks.

If a sick child is found in a collective children's unit, the room should be disinfected and ventilated; at home, it is best to let the child live in a separate room or corner; prevent adverse stimuli such as wind, smoke, fatigue, mental stress, etc.

(2) The sick child’s room should be kept fresh with air

But you should also prevent yourself from catching cold, wash and dry your clothes and bedding frequently, and keep them clean. After the onset of the disease, the sick child should pay attention to rest and ensure sleep. For children whose frequent coughing at night affects their sleep, sedatives may be given as appropriate.

(3) Pay attention to dietary adjustment

It is necessary to ensure the daily supply of calories, fluids, vitamins and other nutrients. Especially for children whose coughing and vomiting affect their eating, they need dry, soft and easy-to-digest food. Eat small meals frequently and replenish at any time. Avoid eating raw, cold, spicy, fatty and sweet foods.

(4) Timely expectoration to prevent respiratory arrest

Some drugs that can dilute sputum can be given to facilitate coughing up of sputum, but they are not suitable for patients with severe coughing reactions or small infants. For severe sputum blockage, a suction device should be used to suck out the secretions.

(5) Artificial respiration should be given when respiratory arrest, cyanosis, hypoxia, or convulsion occurs.
