What are the dangers of abnormal glucose metabolism?

Speaking of abnormal sugar metabolism, many friends will think of diabetes, but did you know that this is not actually a disease? Abnormal sugar metabolism does not mean that you already have diabetes. If you change your lifestyle and control your diet during the stage of abnormal sugar metabolism, you can actually avoid the occurrence of diabetes. However, the hazards of abnormal sugar metabolism cannot be ignored. This article will analyze the specific hazards of abnormal sugar metabolism.

Epidemiological research results show that the risk of cardiovascular disease gradually increases from normal glucose metabolism to abnormal glucose regulation to diabetes. Paying full attention to the early screening of abnormal glucose metabolism and taking effective measures to actively intervene can greatly delay or even avoid the occurrence of diabetes, thereby more effectively preventing cardiovascular events.

1. Harms of Abnormal Sugar Metabolism

Abnormal glucose metabolism includes two conditions: IGT and impaired fasting glucose (IFG). People with IGT have more insulin resistance and are more likely to develop diabetes, while the risk of cardiovascular disease is significantly increased. The damage of increased blood sugar after meals to end organs is mainly manifested in: the acute peak after meals causes an increase in glycation products such as methyl-adipaldehyde, causing acute toxic reactions, and the glycation products are deposited in the end organs, causing macrovascular, microvascular and neurological complications. The higher the blood sugar concentration, the greater the difference between the blood sugar concentration in the tissues and organs, the more serious the damage to the tissues, and ultimately the formation of atherosclerosis. At the same time, cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity, lipid metabolism disorders, hypertension, and hyperinsulinemia often accumulate in IGT patients, further increasing the risk of cardiovascular events.

A large number of studies have shown that patients with IGT have a significantly increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the future compared with people with normal blood sugar. The Daqing study in my country followed up 577 IGT patients for 20 years, suggesting that IGT not only increases cardiovascular mortality, but is also associated with all-cause mortality. The results of the GAMI study also showed that the incidence of composite cardiovascular endpoint events was significantly higher in patients with impaired glucose tolerance than in patients with normal glucose tolerance (p=0.003). IGT is an independent risk factor for restenosis after stent implantation in patients with coronary artery disease. Therefore, paying attention to early abnormal glucose metabolism and hyperglycemia after loading are of great significance to the long-term prognosis of patients.

After reading the introduction in this article, I believe you already know very clearly the dangers of abnormal sugar metabolism. In order to reduce the harm caused by this disease, I hope that all patients and friends must cooperate with the doctor in the treatment of the disease. In normal times, be careful not to eat too greasy food, especially be careful not to eat foods with high sugar content, and do physical exercise so that the harm of abnormal sugar metabolism can be minimized.
