In addition, traditional Chinese medicine has a very long history of treating coughs, and there are also many Chinese medicinal materials that can treat coughs. If you want to use Chinese herbal medicine to treat a cough, you should learn about the types of Chinese herbal medicine that can relieve coughs.

1. Chinese herbal medicine that can relieve cough includes loquat leaves

Ingredients: Contains saponins, amygdalin, oleanolic acid, etc.

Nature and flavor: bitter, neutral. It enters the lung and stomach meridians.

Function: Clears the lungs and resolves phlegm, relieves cough and asthma. Because it contains amygdalin, its effect is similar to that of bitter almonds. After oral administration, it decomposes into trace amounts of hydrocyanic acid, which has a certain cough-relieving effect. The oil contained in it has a mild expectorant effect. The water decoction of this product has antibacterial, antiasthmatic and expectorant effects in animal experiments.

2. The Chinese herbal medicine that can relieve cough is Stemona japonica

Ingredients: Contains various bioalkaloids such as Stemonal and Prostemonal.

Nature and flavor: sweet, bitter, neutral. It enters the lung meridian.

Function: moisturizes the lungs and relieves cough, kills lice and insects. Pharmacological experiments have shown that Stemona can reduce the excitability of the respiratory center, inhibit the cough reflex, and thus produce an antitussive effect, making it a central antitussive drug. The antibacterial test showed that it had a certain antibacterial effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic Streptococcus and Pneumococcus.

3. Chinese herbal medicine that can relieve cough includes Pinellia ternata

Nature and flavor: pungent, warm, toxic. It enters the spleen, stomach and lung meridians.

Function: Drying dampness and resolving phlegm, relieving adverse effects and stopping vomiting, eliminating lumps and dispersing nodules. Pharmacological experiments show that it has antitussive, antiemetic and emetic effects (raw pinellia). The antitussive effect is slightly inferior to codeine phosphate. The mechanism of action may be direct inhibition of the cough center, and the antiemetic effect may be due to inhibition of the vomiting center.

Platycodon is the root of the Platycodon grandiflorum plant of the Campanulaceae family, which contains platycodon saponins, spinachsterol and its glycosides, platycodonic acid, etc. Among them, platycodon saponins can stimulate the mucous membrane, causing hypersecretion of the mucous membrane, diluting sputum and promoting its discharge; at the same time, saponins also have antitussive, sedative and antipyretic effects.
