What causes ammonia taste in mouth?

Brushing teeth every morning and evening can not only ensure our oral hygiene, but also make our breath fresh when talking to people. Because when talking to people face to face, if there is bad breath, it is very annoying. Sometimes bad breath is related to one's own living habits, and sometimes bad breath is also related to stomach and genetic factors. So what is the reason for the ammonia smell in the mouth?

What causes ammonia taste in mouth?

Bad breath annoys others and causes trouble for yourself. There are two main inducing factors: one is poor eating and hygiene habits, which lead to damage to the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract; the other is the microorganisms in the esophagus.

Bad breath can indicate internal diseases

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that bad breath occurs when there is heat accumulation in the gastrointestinal tract, excessive stomach fire, or heat accumulation in the lungs and large intestine, which is mostly caused by the evil fire invading the stomach. In addition, bad breath may be caused by hot phlegm invading the lungs, or by hot phlegm accumulating for a long time and turning into pus and corruption, or by internal heat caused by yin deficiency. This situation is usually accompanied by other symptoms of heat such as dry stools, swollen and painful gums, red face and hot body.

But there are many other reasons that can cause bad breath. One common cause is oral disease. According to experts, untreated caries, residual roots, residual crowns, periodontitis and oral mucosal diseases in the mouth can cause bad breath. This is because food residues and plaque often remain in deep caries cavities and under the overhangs of poor restorations, and bacteria ferment and decompose them, producing odor. Patients with periodontal disease often have large amounts of tartar and plaque, and the bacteria in the periodontal pockets ferment to produce hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, which produce a foul odor.

Another common cause is digestive system disease. Experts say that bad breath may be caused by indigestion, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, and gastrointestinal metabolic disorders; stinky duck egg-like bad breath often occurs in pyloric obstruction and advanced gastric cancer.

In addition to these two common causes, some other diseases of the oral cavity's adjacent tissues, such as purulent tonsillitis and atrophic rhinitis, can produce purulent secretions and emit a foul odor; patients with diabetic ketoacidosis can exhale acetone-smelling gas; patients with uremia exhale the smell of rotten apples. In addition, diseases such as leukemia, vitamin deficiency, and heavy metal poisoning can all cause bad breath.
