Pain at the root of the tongue in the elderly may be a hidden danger of some serious disease

Many people regard tongue pain as heat in the body, but not all tongue pains are related to heat in the body. Some may be signs of certain diseases. So what are the causes of tongue pain and heat in the body?

Severe anemia: including iron deficiency anemia and megaloblastic anemia. In severe anemia, the oral mucosa and tongue papillae will experience metabolic disorders, causing abnormal changes in the epithelial cell tissue, resulting in tongue pain and atrophic glossitis. It may also be accompanied by symptoms and diseases such as oral and tongue mucosal ulcers, angular cheilitis, oral fungal infections, and loss of taste.

Uremia: Tongue pain may be the earliest and most common symptom in such patients. Patients may also have glossitis, urine odor in the mouth, and oral mucosal ulcers, and may have previous gastrointestinal symptoms such as anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Because the patient's kidneys cannot effectively excrete metabolic waste from the body, the amount of retained toxic substances, such as guanidines that are harmful to the nervous system, increases. The decomposition of the latter produces ammonium carbonate and ammonia, which can also cause varying degrees of damage to the tongue mucosa.

Precursors of cerebral thrombosis: There is no damage or ulcers on the surface of the tongue, and tongue pain occurs at the root or sides of the tongue. This type of tongue pain is also called tongue microangiitis glossalgia. It is more common in people over 60 years old, and most of the patients are women.

Studies have shown that the occurrence of microangiitis is closely related to systemic arteriosclerosis, increased blood lipids and thickening of blood viscosity. Therefore, if elderly people experience unexplained tongue pain, they should go to the hospital for examination as soon as possible.
