How to protect your eyes properly

How to protect your eyes properly

Eyes are an important part of the human body. If you have bad reading habits or do not use your eyes correctly, it is likely to cause various eye problems, such as myopia, astigmatism, etc. If there is a problem with the eyes, it will have an extremely adverse impact on people's lives, so in daily life, we must pay attention to protecting our eyes, especially for students. Below, I will introduce several ways to use your eyes correctly for your reference.

1. The lighting should not be too glaring

Comfortable lighting can provide good visual information. Light that is too strong or too dark can have adverse effects on the eyes. Therefore, the desks where teenagers usually read should be equipped with side lights to reduce glare and reduce damage to the eyes.

2. Take rest

Teenagers read, write, watch TV, and use computers for several hours without rest. Some students even go to bed late at night. This not only affects their physical health, but also puts too much strain on the eyes and easily causes accommodative (or functional) myopia, also known as pseudomyopia. It will also cause the extraocular muscles to exert pressure on the scleral tissue of the eyeball wall, increasing the intraocular pressure and causing congestion of the intraocular tissue. Therefore, it is advisable for students to take a break every 50 minutes when reading or studying.

3. Maintain correct posture

Do not hunch over or lie on the table to read, and do not lie on the bed and read sideways. The distance between the eyes and the book should be 30-35 cm, the body should be kept at a palm's length (about 10 cm) away from the desk, and the angle between the book and the desk should be kept at 30-45 degrees. If the book is placed horizontally on the table, you have to lower your head slightly when reading. This will easily move the book closer to your eyes, increasing the burden on your eyes by 2-3 times, causing fatigue in the neck muscles and back of the neck, and unconsciously leaning forward will lead to decreased vision in the long run.

4. Don’t stare at the screen for a long time

Try to minimize contact with electrical equipment such as televisions, computers, game consoles, etc. that generate radiation to the human eye, because the X-rays radiated by cathode ray tubes can consume a large amount of rhodopsin in the retina, which can significantly reduce vision. It is best to use an LCD monitor for your computer to reduce the damage of electromagnetic waves to your eyes. Students who frequently play video games are more likely to damage their eyesight. Moreover, students with low vision who have been playing video games since childhood cannot even correct their vision with glasses. The reason is that the functions of the retina and macula have been damaged.

5. Have a regular work and rest schedule and get enough sleep

Lack of sleep can cause conjunctival congestion, increased secretions, photophobia, tearing, eye pain and other conjunctival and corneal inflammation. Try to avoid damage to your eyes from wind, sand, smoke, ultraviolet rays, infrared rays, chemicals, medical supplies, etc. Personal hygiene should be maintained clean. Personal items such as towels, washbasins, handkerchiefs, etc. should be used by one person only. Try not to use other people's belongings to avoid cross infection, eye diseases, and vision loss.

6. Do eye exercises regularly

Doing eye exercises is a concrete manifestation of the importance that my country's primary and secondary schools attach to eye health. By massaging the acupoints and muscles around the eyes, stimulating nerve endings, increasing blood circulation in the tissues around the eyes, and regulating eye metabolism, the purpose of eliminating fatigue, enhancing vision, and preventing myopia is achieved. In addition, more exposure to natural scenery such as green mountains and clear waters is also beneficial to eye health.
