What are the side effects of brain tumor surgery? Why does brain tumor surgery have sequelae?

Meningioma sounds scary, but in fact it is a benign tumor and is not as harmful to the human body as malignant tumors. So what are the side effects of brain tumor surgery? Why does brain tumor surgery have sequelae?

Complications of meningioma surgery:

1. Aggravation of local neurological symptoms: The tumor grows around the nerves, and these nerves are inevitably damaged during the nerve removal process. Mild cases can be recovered.

2. Impairment of consciousness may occur, and even respiratory arrest and low blood pressure may occur.

3. Intracranial pressure continues to increase. There are also new obstructive lesions such as brain edema and hematoma.

Why are there sequelae after meningioma surgery?

The surgical site for meningioma is the brain, which controls the normal functioning of organs throughout the body. The risk is greater than that of surgery in other parts of the body, and the postoperative sequelae are also unpredictable. This requires doctors to remove as much of the brain tumor as possible during surgery while minimizing damage to surrounding normal tissue.

In some cases, the sequelae after brain tumor surgery are unavoidable. During the surgical removal of the tumor, some brain nerve tissue is often damaged due to the adhesion of the tumor tissue to the brain tissue or the need for surgical removal, resulting in some corresponding clinical symptoms, such as limb numbness, pain, movement problems, speech problems, etc. Even though we know that this may result, the lesions must still be removed. Otherwise, brain tumor surgery will be meaningless and the tumor will soon recur. In addition, residual tumors that cannot be removed during surgery will continue to compress local brain tissue and cause various discomfort symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, etc. Even if the operation is relatively successful and the visible tumor is completely removed, the corresponding body functions will of course be difficult to recover because the compression of the tumor before the operation has already caused local tissue necrosis. However, many brain tumor patients will experience improvement in symptoms after surgery, including headaches, vomiting, etc. This will depend on follow-up treatment after surgery to alleviate the symptoms.
