Ephedra is a Chinese medicine or a herbal medicine for dispersing wind and cold; in ancient times, it was also known as Longsha and Beixiang. There are three species of Ephedra plants: Ephedra sinica, Ephedra equisetina and Ephedra intermedia, and the used part is the herbaceous stem. Ephedra sinica is a small shrub, often in herbaceous form, with a stem height of 20 to 40 cm. It has few branches, and the woody stem is short and creeping; the twigs are round, opposite or whorled, with internodes 2.5 to 6 cm long and about 2 mm in diameter.

[Other names] Longsha, dog bone, Beixiang, Beiyan

[Origin] This product is the herbaceous stem of Ephedra sinica Stapf, Ephedra intermedia Schrenk et CA Mey. or Ephedra equisetina Bge., which belong to the Ephedraceae family.

[Nature and flavor and meridians] Pungent, slightly bitter, warm. It enters the lung and bladder meridians.

【Function and indications】

It can induce sweating and dispel cold, clear the lungs and relieve asthma, promote diuresis and reduce swelling. Used for colds, chest tightness, cough, edema and bronchial asthma. Honey ephedra moistens the lungs and relieves coughs, and is often used for asthma and coughs when external symptoms have been relieved.

【Preparation】

Ephedra: Take the raw materials, remove the woody stems, residual roots and impurities, shake off the ash and cut into sections; or wash and slightly moisten, cut into sections and dry.

Honey ephedra: Take refined honey, add appropriate amount of boiling water to dilute it, pour it into the ephedra segments, mix well, and steam it. Place it in a frying container and heat it over low heat. When it is no longer sticky, take it out and let it cool. For every 100kg of ephedra segments, use 20kg of refined honey.
