What causes glaucoma?

The incidence of glaucoma is also relatively high, so if you want to pay attention to the correct treatment, you also need to understand the causes that lead to glaucoma, such as age and gender. The incidence rate for women in their thirties is higher than that for men, and there are also genetic factors that affect it.

1. Anatomical factors:

The shallow anterior chamber, short axial length, thick lens and short corneal diameter lead to narrow anterior chamber angle, obstruction of aqueous humor outflow, increased intraocular pressure and the formation of glaucoma.

2. Age and gender:

The open-angle type often occurs around the age of 30, with no obvious gender difference. Patients over 45 years old with angle-closure glaucoma account for 68.2%-76.8% of all glaucoma patients, with more women than men.

3. Genetic factors:

Glaucoma is a multi-gene hereditary disease. The incidence rate in those with a family history is 6 times higher than that in those without a family history, accounting for 13%-47% of the total number of cases, and the incidence rate in the patients' relatives is 3.5%-16%.

4. Refractive factors:

Patients with refractive errors have a high incidence of myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. One-third of myopia patients are accompanied by or develop into open-angle glaucoma, and hyperopia is often accompanied by angle-closure glaucoma.

5. Bad living habits:

Smoking and drinking, irregular living habits, irregular diet, mood swings, habitual constipation, and stubborn insomnia.

6. Eyes and systemic lesions.

7. Improper use of medication.
