The weather is relatively dry in winter, and babies are particularly prone to nosebleeds during this period. In this case, we can stop the bleeding through acupressure, blockage and local treatment.

Finger pressure to stop bleeding

1. When your baby has a nosebleed, let the baby sit down first, and use your thumb and index finger to press tightly on both sides of the baby's nostrils, pressing towards the nasal septum. Generally, the bleeding will stop after about 5-10 minutes of pressure.

When stopping the bleeding, you should patiently comfort the baby not to cry, open his mouth wide to breathe, tilt his head slightly forward, and try to spit out the blood swallowed from the nasopharynx into the mouth. This way you can know the amount of bleeding and avoid swallowing the nosebleed into the stomach, which will irritate the stomach and cause abdominal pain and vomiting.

2. Use a sterile cotton ball to stick Yunnan Baiyao on it and stuff it into the nostrils, or use a hemostatic sponge to pack it. At the same time, place a towel soaked in cold water on the bridge of the nose or the large blood vessels on both sides of the neck for cold compress, so that the blood vessels will contract due to the cold stimulation, thereby achieving the purpose of stopping bleeding. At this time, you need to pay attention to the pharynx. If there is blood flowing down from the pharynx, it means that the nose bleeding has not stopped.

If the baby is bleeding heavily and has symptoms of hemorrhagic shock such as pale complexion, sweating, rapid heart rate, and poor spirits, the baby should be placed in a semi-recumbent position and sent to the hospital for treatment as soon as possible. The doctor will give appropriate treatment based on the location of the nose and the amount of blood. If bleeding occurs repeatedly, local treatment can be carried out using freezing, microwaves and chemical drugs. For smaller amounts of nosebleeds, you can also use nasal drops containing 1% ephedrine to stop the bleeding by constricting the blood vessels.

When the baby has a nosebleed, let him lower his head (note that he should not raise his head) and raise his upper limbs to increase the amount of blood returning to the heart in the superior vena cava, thereby reducing the blood supply to the nasal cavity to achieve the purpose of stopping bleeding.

Avoid tilting your head back. When you tilt your head back, the blood from the front nostrils will flow unimpeded to the back nostrils, and then through the back nostrils to the mouth. This way, the blood will not easily coagulate into clots, making it difficult to stop the bleeding.
