4. Relaxing your body and mind, reducing stress, and maintaining mental health are also relevant to avoiding back pain. When people are anxious, the body goes into a “fight or flight” response, which causes muscles to tense and prepare for action, so people who are nervous and stressed are more likely to experience back pain.
