How to understand the last glimmer of light

How to understand the last glimmer of light

The phenomenon of last light of life originated from Buddhism and is a Taoist term. It is a common natural phenomenon, which refers to the sudden excitement of a person's spirit before death. In fact, this can be explained by science. It is caused by the secretion of hormones by the adrenal glands.

1. The last burst of light is a common natural phenomenon. When the sun is about to set in the west, the sky will be bright for a short time due to the reflection of the sunset light, and then quickly become dark. In the past, there were no electric lights, and people lit incense oil lamps or kerosene lamps. When the oil in the lamp was about to burn out, it would suddenly light up and then go out. That's because the last drop of oil loses its adhesion or pulling force and rises very quickly, so it suddenly lights up. When the life of the filament of an electric light bulb is about to end, the tungsten filament burns and the light bulb suddenly lights up, thus becoming scrapped. These can all be seen as a last-glow phenomenon.

2. People also experience a last-minute lucid moment before they die . For example, a patient who has been in a coma for a long time may suddenly wake up and even have a brief conversation with his relatives; a person who has lost his appetite and refuses to eat or drink may suddenly want to eat. These phenomena of "improvement" of the disease are an illusion, giving people the wrong impression that the patient is out of danger. However, experienced people can tell at a glance that this is a last burst of vitality, a signal from the patient to say goodbye to his loved ones.

3. Why do people have a moment of lucidity before they die? Medical science tells us that it is mainly due to the hormones secreted by the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are a pair of very important endocrine glands, which are structurally divided into the cortex and medulla. The cortex secretes glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Among them, glucocorticoids are mainly used for "emergency situations". They can quickly relieve symptoms and help patients through the critical period through anti-inflammatory, anti-toxin, anti-shock, and anti-allergic effects. The adrenal medulla secretes adrenaline and norepinephrine, both of which can excite the heart, constrict blood vessels, and increase blood pressure, thus saving people from shock.

4. When a person is on the verge of death , under the control of the cerebral cortex, it quickly instructs the adrenal cortex and medulla to secrete the above hormones, which mobilizes all the positive factors in the body and makes the patient go from coma to consciousness; from being unable to speak to being able to talk a few sentences and explain the last affairs; from not being able to eat to wanting to eat and drink. These are all the endocrine hormones at work under the command of the central nervous system.

5. Terminal lucidity has certain benefits for patients and their families. If the person the patient is eager to see is still on the way, the life span can be extended for a period of time to realize the patient's long-cherished wish; if the patient has something to say, the time can also be extended to allow the patient to finish speaking.

If we can buy more time to allow the "fundamental" medicine to take effect, we will be able to save the patient's life fundamentally. Then the "last glimmer of life" will be transformed into "resurrection from the dead", which is the goal that doctors strive for.
