Musk is soft, oily and loose. The granular ones are commonly known as "dangmenzi", which are irregular spherical or granular. The surface is mostly purple-black, oily and shiny, with slight hemp texture, and dark brown or yellow-brown in cross section. The powdery ones are mostly brown or yellow-brown, with a small amount of shed inner membrane and fine hairs. The breeders are granular, short strips or irregular clumps; the surface is uneven, purple-black or dark brown, oily, slightly shiny, and has a small amount of hair and fallen inner membrane. The aroma is strong and unique, and the taste is slightly spicy, slightly bitter and salty.

Nature and flavor: warm; pungent; enters the heart and spleen meridians. Functions and indications: Invigorate the mind, promote blood circulation and relieve menstruation, reduce swelling and relieve pain. It is used for coma due to febrile disease, syncope due to phlegm, sudden syncope due to qi stagnation, coma due to evil spirits, amenorrhea, masses, difficult labor and stillbirth, sudden pain in the heart and abdomen, carbuncles and scrofula, sore throat, pain from falls and injuries, and numbness.

Contains musk ketone, musk ketone, musk alcohol, musk pyran, musk pyridine, hydroxymusk pyridine-A, hydroxymusk pyridine-B, 3-methylcyclotridecanone, cyclotetradecanone, etc. It also contains 11 androstane derivatives, including cholester-4-ene-3-one, cholesterol and its esters, testosterone, estrogen, and 5α-androstane-3,17-dione. It also contains protein and amino acids. Musk contains about 25% protein. A peptide active substance with a molecular weight of about 1000 was found in musk.
