What are the causes of high eosinophil ratio?

What are the causes of high eosinophil ratio?

If an elevated eosinophil ratio is found during the examination, it is mostly caused by some diseases. There are many diseases that can cause this phenomenon, such as some skin diseases, the more common ones are eczema, psoriasis, etc. Other allergic diseases can also often cause this phenomenon, such as bronchial asthma, urticaria, angioedema, etc. Some other tumor diseases and blood diseases may also lead to an elevated eosinophil ratio.

1. Reasons for high eosinophil percentage:

1. Allergic diseases: bronchial asthma, drug allergy, urticaria, food allergy, angioedema, serum sickness, etc. The peripheral blood eosinophilia can reach more than 10%.

2. Parasitic diseases: Schistosomiasis, ascariasis, hookworm disease, etc. will cause an increase in eosinophils in the blood, often reaching 10% or more. Some patients with parasitic infections have a significant increase in eosinophils, with the total number of inverted white blood cells reaching tens of thousands, more than 90% of which are eosinophils, an eosinophilic leukemoid reaction.

3. Skin diseases: such as eczema, exfoliative dermatitis, pemphigus, psoriasis, etc., can be seen in a mild to moderate increase in peripheral blood eosinophils.

4. Blood diseases: such as chronic myeloid leukemia, eosinophilic leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, eosinophilic granuloma, etc. The peripheral blood eosinophils may increase to varying degrees, and some may be accompanied by an increase in immature eosinophils.

5. Certain malignant tumors: Certain epithelial tumors such as lung cancer can cause an increase in eosinophils.

6. Certain infectious diseases: In acute infectious diseases, the number of eosinophils usually decreases, but scarlet fever can cause an increase in eosinophils.

7. Others: Rheumatic diseases, hypopituitarism, allergic interstitial nephritis, etc. are often accompanied by eosinophilia.

2. Diagnostic criteria for idiopathic eosinophilic syndrome:

1. Peripheral blood eosinophils>1.5×109/L and persist for more than 6 months, or death within 6 months after the onset of clinical symptoms. Clinical symptoms are nonspecific and may include fever, rash, fatigue, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, or diarrhea. Physical examination may reveal rash, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, pulmonary rales, abdominal tenderness, or neurological abnormalities.

2. No cause of eosinophilia has been found.

3. There are symptoms or signs of organ involvement, such as shadows in the lungs, abnormal cardiac ultrasound, etc.

After reading the above explanation, now you know what the high percentage of eosinophils means. If you find that the eosinophil percentage is high, you should get checked as soon as possible to confirm the cause.
