The difference between foremilk and hindmilk

The difference between foremilk and hindmilk

The so-called foremilk and hindmilk of breast milk refer to the changes that occur during the baby's sucking process. When breastfeeding begins, it is called foremilk, which is relatively thin and contains more water. As the baby continues to suck, the milk gradually becomes thicker and is called hindmilk. Understanding the difference is important in order to better breastfeed your baby. That is to say, when breastfeeding your baby, do not change breasts frequently. You should empty one side and then feed the other.

The difference between foremilk and hindmilk

1. In terms of time

In terms of time, foremilk refers to the part of milk that just flows out during breastfeeding.

Hindmilk is the milk that comes out a few minutes after feeding.

2. In terms of color

In terms of color, foremilk is light in color, sometimes even similar to the color of water, and is more watery.

The hind milk is milky white in color, like the color of pure fish soup, and has a thicker texture.

3. Nutritional content

In terms of nutritional components, foremilk mainly contains water, protein, vitamins, inorganic salts and other ingredients.

The main function is to replenish water, which is why babies who are exclusively breastfed before 6 months old do not need to drink water, because breast milk contains a lot of water.

Compared with foremilk, the main component of hindmilk is fat, which can provide the necessary calories and energy for the baby's body development. This is why the baby can feel full by drinking milk.

Things to note when feeding your baby

1. When feeding your baby, you should not switch breasts frequently. You should finish feeding one side before feeding the other side. This way, the baby can absorb the nutrients from the front and back milk.

2. When breastfeeding, more oil will be secreted only after the lactation reaction, that is, after the milk letdown. Therefore, let the baby feed on one breast for a longer time.

3. Some elderly people say that foremilk has no nutritional value and should be squeezed out. This is wrong. Both foremilk and hindmilk contain the nutrients that children need, and neither can be lacking.
