How long can eye drops be used after opening?

The shelf life of eye drops is generally one to two years, but don’t assume that opened eye drops can be used until the expiration date. Experts point out that once eye drops are opened and come into contact with the air, they should be discarded after two months even if they are not completely used up.

Eye drops are liquid medicines with relatively poor stability. Once opened, their active ingredients will undergo physical and chemical changes due to contact with air and the influence of factors such as temperature, light, and heat, causing the medicine to deteriorate. This can easily lead to eye infections after use. Therefore, it is best to use them up within one month of opening, and no longer than two months. Eye ointment should not be used for more than three months after opening.

Eye drops (ointments) must be stored in a cool, dark place, away from direct sunlight, high temperature and humidity. If the eye drops (ointment) change color or have an odor, particles, become turbid, or have cotton-like sediment, it means that the medicine has deteriorated and should never be used.

When using eye drops (ointment), you should pay attention to the following points:

Remember to wash your hands before and after applying eye drops; shake suspension eye drops evenly before use; do not let the bottle mouth of eye drops touch eyelashes or eyes to prevent contamination, and put the cap back on immediately after applying eye drops; when used together, apply eye drops first and then eye ointment; there should be an interval of more than five minutes between applying two or more eye drops; after applying eye drops, close your eyes for five minutes or gently press the upper and lower lacrimal ducts at the inner corner of the eye with your fingers for at least two minutes; if you experience any discomfort after applying eye drops, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
