What does high purine mean?

Many people will find out that they have high purine levels in their bodies when they go to the hospital for examination, but many people are not clear about the true meaning of high purine levels. In fact, this substance is a metabolite in the human body. If the purine level is high, it will cause some problems in the body's metabolism, which can easily lead to complications. The most common one is gout. In this case, it is best not to eat any food containing high purine.

meaning:

Purine, also known as purine, is a substance that exists mainly in the form of purine nucleotides in the human body. It is an organic compound with the molecular formula C5H4N4 and is a colorless crystal. Purine is a metabolite in the metabolic process and plays a very important role in energy supply and metabolic regulation. If the body fails to metabolize and excrete purines through the kidneys, these substances will eventually form uric acid and be stored in the body as crystals. If there is a trigger that causes the release of uric acid crystals deposited in soft tissues, it will cause the immune system to overreact and form inflammation. When the blood uric acid concentration is too high, it can cause diseases such as gout. Seafood and animal meat both have high purine content.

Purine is an organic compound, a colorless crystal. Purine is oxidized into uric acid in the human body. Seafood and animal meat have relatively high purine content. These foods with high purine content are called high-purine foods. Foods that contain 100-1000 mg of purine per 100 grams of food are high-purine foods.

Foods high in purine can have serious consequences for gout patients. Gout is essentially a disease in which excess uric acid crystals cannot be processed by the intestines and kidneys. These crystals deposit in the feet and other major joints, causing frequent bouts of pain that are not controlled with medication. Gout was initially thought to be a disease of the rich because only people who could afford foods high in purine would develop the disease.

Today, it is known that high-purine foods are only one of many factors that can cause gout. Poor kidney function or blood circulation problems are also some of the contributing factors. Standard medical advice for people with gout is to consume no more than 15% of your diet in protein each day. Although not all meat products are high in purines, it is better to limit your protein intake than to succumb to the temptation of protein-rich meats.

Foods high in purines include offal (organs), anchovies, canned sardines, liver, kidney, heart, meat extracts (broth and gravy), and various canned seafood. Other foods that are slightly lower in caffeine include game meat and lentils. These are the types of foods that are not suitable for gout patients. Other protein sources, such as nuts and ground beef, should be limited to one serving per day.

As with any restrictive diet, the concept is to minimize harmful substances. Healthy people can safely consume large amounts of foods high in purine without any problems. People who are trying to lose weight are even encouraged to consume foods high in caffeine. Because the body is able to continuously eliminate excess uric acid through the kidneys, a high-protein diet only increases the risk of developing gout but does not directly cause the disease.
