Is it cerebral palsy if the baby tilts his head back?

Generally speaking, when a baby has head depression, a very small number of them are related to cerebral palsy. Children with cerebral palsy often have abnormal muscle tone. When the muscle tone is too high, it may cause the symptom of the head tilting back in children with cerebral palsy. Of course, it is also necessary to correctly distinguish between the head tilting back in cerebral palsy and the normal head tilting back. As a parent, you should also observe whether the child has other symptoms of cerebral palsy. Of course, you should go to the hospital for a formal examination in time.

Does a baby's head tilted back mean it has cerebral palsy? It can be clearly said that in very small cases it is related to cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy often causes abnormal muscle tone in children. When the baby's muscle tone is high, the baby's head may tilt back.

Why does the baby's head tilt back? From now on, this "three heads up" standard cannot correctly summarize the developmental status of all children. Each child's development is different. Therefore, if some children are three months old and still tilt their heads back, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem. After all, three-month-old babies are still too young. Some of them develop more slowly or do not get much exercise, so their necks are not strong enough to support the weight of their heads. Babies should be held upright at three months old (it is generally recommended to be held upright at four months old). If the correct holding position is not adopted, it is easy for the head to tilt back frequently. If a child often keeps his head tilted back, his head will also tilt back when he is lying prone or held upright. For example, some premature babies need to keep their heads tilted back due to tracheal intubation during hospitalization, and after being discharged from the hospital, their heads will tilt back due to this habitual posture.

How to distinguish "cerebral palsy" from normal "head tilt"? In fact, there is a very simple way to distinguish them. The reason why children with cerebral palsy tilt their heads back is essentially due to the influence of high muscle tone, which will be reflected in the limbs. Parents can check the "dorsiflexion angle of the foot" to determine whether the baby's "head tilt back" is normal.

(How to check the dorsiflexion angle of the foot: hold the child's calf with one hand and push the sole of the child's foot toward the front of the calf with the other hand. The angle between the back of the foot and the front of the calf is the dorsiflexion angle of the foot. If it is less than 80 degrees, it is normal. Otherwise, it indicates a problem and you should see a pediatric neurologist for examination.)

There are many symptoms of cerebral palsy. Even if the above method finds that the baby has abnormal muscle tone, it does not mean that the baby has cerebral palsy. The diagnosis of cerebral palsy requires multi-faceted diagnosis. If your baby has symptoms such as head tilt back or abnormal muscle tone, don't worry too much. Early examination and timely treatment can avoid harm.
