Swelling below the knee suggests thrombosis involving the superficial femoral vein or femoral vein; swelling of the entire lower limb indicates thrombosis of the superficial femoral vein. Measuring the circumference of both legs can often help determine the extent of swelling. Normally, the circumference of both lower limbs should be less than 1 cm when compared in the same plane.
