What to do if your glucose tolerance is high during pregnancy

1. What is the purpose of a glucose tolerance test?

After a normal person ingests a certain amount of glucose, blood sugar levels will first rise. After a certain period of time, the glucose will be synthesized into glycogen and stored in the body, and the blood sugar level will return to the fasting level.

After taking in a certain amount of glucose, the blood sugar and urine sugar levels are measured at certain intervals. By observing the changes in blood sugar concentration before and after sugar administration, the insulin secretion can be inferred. This measurement is called a glucose tolerance test. The glucose tolerance test is mostly used for patients suspected of having diabetes (i.e., people whose blood sugar is higher than normal but does not meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes).

2. Dietary considerations for pregnant women with high glucose tolerance

Pregnant women with high blood sugar may experience dry skin, nausea, poor spirits and other symptoms, which are mainly caused by genetics and unreasonable diet during pregnancy; it is best to divide into 3 large meals and 3 small meals; eat less high-sugar fruits; 400-500 grams of vegetables per day, of which colored vegetables should not be less than 50%, legumes

Breakfast: It is recommended to drink some sugar-free soy milk or milk, remember, it must be sugar-free, and then a small multi-grain bread, which can be made of corn flour or buckwheat flour, and two slices of whole wheat bread.

Main meal: multi-grain rice. It is recommended to add some millet and black rice when cooking rice. Because the sugar content in white rice flour is very high, it is best to eat multi-grain rice as the staple food.

Dinner: Basically the same as lunch.

Then have a snack before going to bed, before 10 o'clock, because if you can't eat for more than 8 hours after going to bed, if you don't eat for a long time, pregnant women with diabetes will easily have elevated urine ketones, which is toxic to the child. Therefore, you must have a snack before going to bed. It is recommended to eat fruit and a small amount of soda crackers.

3. Glucose tolerance test results

Normal glucose tolerance: fasting blood glucose <6.1mmol/L (110mg/dl); reaches peak value 30-60min after oral glucose intake, with peak value <11.1mmol/L (200mg/dl); basically returns to normal level at 120min, i.e. <7.8mmol/L (140mg/dl), and urine sugar is (-). This glucose tolerance curve shows that the body has a good ability to handle glucose load.

Diabetic glucose tolerance: fasting blood glucose ≥7.0mmol/L (126mg/dl); delayed peak, often occurring after 1 hour, peak value ≥11.1mmol/L (200mg/dl); cannot return to normal levels within 120min, i.e. >7.8mmol/L (140mg/dl). The blood glucose level 2 hours after taking sugar is the most important judgment indicator. Many patients with early diabetes may only show an increase in blood sugar levels for 2 hours, and their urine sugar is often positive.
