Silver reacts easily with sulfur and hydrogen sulfide to form black silver sulfide, which is common on tarnished silver coins or other items. Silver can react with oxygen at high temperatures to form brown silver oxide. Metallic silver can be attacked by strong oxidizing agents such as potassium permanganate or potassium dichromate in the presence of potassium bromide (KBr); these compounds are used in photography to bleach the visible image, converting it to silver halide, which can either be removed by sodium thiosulfate or redeveloped to strengthen the original image.
