How long does it take for lochia to be clear after cesarean section

Caesarean section is a method of delivery. The technology is relatively mature now, so many women will choose caesarean section when they cannot give birth naturally. Caesarean section allows women to avoid experiencing birth canal pain, but there will be a relatively long recovery period afterwards. However, no matter whether you choose natural birth or caesarean section, you need to go through the stage of expelling lochia. How long does it take for the lochia to be cleared after a caesarean section? Let’s analyze this issue below so that people can understand it better.

Lochia refers to the excess blood and turbid fluid left in the uterus after giving birth. It is caused by abnormal circulation of qi and blood, and blood stasis and qi stagnation. Postpartum lochia contains blood, necrotic uterine decidua, decidua at the placenta attachment site and other tissues, and congested blood and mucus that are discharged through the vagina. Whether it is a natural birth or a caesarean section, postpartum lochia is a necessary stage for mothers. If lochia lasts for a long time, is heavy, has an odor, and is dark red in color after a normal birth or caesarean section, timely treatment is required.

Under normal circumstances, the lochia from caesarean section will be clear about 20 days after delivery. The lochia has a bloody smell but is not smelly.

If lochia recurs 30 days after caesarean section and is accompanied by a foul odor, abdominal pain, fever, etc., it is possible that the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, or vagina are infected. If the amount of lochia increases day by day, the color gradually turns red and darker, or there are bruises, accompanied by uterine bleeding, and vaginal trauma, it may also be due to infection that causes the lochia to remain unclean for a long time.

What to eat after childbirth to help discharge lochia?

1. Hawthorn.

Hawthorn not only stimulates the mother's appetite and promotes digestion, but also has the function of dispersing blood stasis. Therefore, if there is a lot of lochia after delivery and it takes a long time to be discharged, you can eat some hawthorn in moderation to accelerate the discharge of lochia in the body.

2. Donkey-hide gelatin.

Donkey-hide gelatin has the effects of nourishing blood and stopping bleeding. It has a good effect on uterine bleeding after consumption. Mothers with heavy lochia after delivery can eat donkey-hide gelatin to promote the early discharge of lochia. In addition, donkey-hide gelatin also has a good effect on lochia caused by postpartum women with insufficient yin blood.

3. Lotus root.

Eating lotus root can help postpartum women promote blood circulation and stop bleeding. If a woman has a lot of lochia after giving birth, she can eat it in moderation. She can make soup or stir-fry it.

4. Brown sugar.

Brown sugar water not only has the effect of replenishing blood, but also can help excrete dirt from the body. Mothers who have excessive lochia after childbirth can drink brown sugar water in moderation. However, you should not drink too much brown sugar water, so as not to have a counterproductive effect.

5. Shenghua Tang.

Shenghua Tang is a postpartum prescription used by many women to disperse blood stasis and stop bleeding. It is suitable for women who experience symptoms such as abdominal pain and retained lochia after delivery. Within 7 days after delivery, drink Shenghua Tang 5-6 times a day. For normal delivery, drink it for about a week, and for caesarean section mothers drink it for about two weeks. It can help the lochia be discharged from the body and allow the uterus to recover as soon as possible.
