Entropion eyelid surgery

Entropion eyelid surgery

Our eyebrows generally grow outwards, but there are exceptions. Entropion and eyelashes are typical examples of ingrown eyebrows. Ingrown eyebrows can irritate our eyeballs and in severe cases may even cause eye diseases. Entropion and trichiasis are two different conditions, which can occur alone or at the same time. Currently, surgery for entropion and trichiasis is a better solution.

Entropion refers to the inward curling of the eyelid margin, with the eyelashes partially or completely falling toward the eyeball. Eyelash inversion refers to the abnormal condition in which eyelashes fall toward the eyeball. The number of them varies, sometimes there are only one or two, and sometimes some or all of them are tilted towards the eyeball. Entropion is divided into three types according to the cause of onset: congenital, spastic, and scar. Clinically, all causes of entropion can cause trichiasis, but trichiasis does not necessarily mean entropion. For example, blepharitis, blepharitis, eyelid burns, and eyelid trauma can all change the direction of eyelashes due to the contraction of conjunctival scars, resulting in trichiasis.

Patients with entropion and trichiasis often have symptoms such as photophobia, tearing, and foreign body sensation. If not treated, the frequent friction of the cornea by the eyelashes may cause corneal opacity or ulcers, resulting in varying degrees of vision loss.

Causes of the disease: Any cause that can cause entropion can cause trichiasis, among which trachoma is the most common in adults, and congenital epicanthus is the most common in children. Other injuries such as blepharitis, hordeolum, eyelid burns, eyelid trauma, etc., may cause scars to form and pull the eyelashes toward the cornea.

For a more permanent cure, the hair follicles can be destroyed and removed by electrolysis, or they can be removed under direct microscopic vision. The cut hair follicles can also be frozen using a micro-freezer. Patients with a large number of inverted eyelashes should undergo corrective surgery for entropion.

The prognosis depends on the cause of the trichiasis. Chronic progressive inflammation, such as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, often causes recurrent episodes of trichiasis and is difficult to cure. Trichiasis caused by trauma or other static scars has good treatment effect.
