The Story of Qingbuliang

Legend has it that after Qin Shihuang unified the seven kingdoms, he began to pacify the Baiyue land in the Lingnan region. In 219 BC, Qin Shihuang appointed Tu Sui as the main general and Zhao Tuo as the deputy general to lead an army of 500,000 to pacify Lingnan, and the army advanced to the Lingnan area. Since Lingnan belongs to the East Asian monsoon climate zone and has tropical and subtropical monsoon marine climate characteristics, the soldiers in the Central Plains were not adapted to the humid climate in the south, fell ill one after another, the army's combat effectiveness was greatly reduced, and they were defeated repeatedly. Just when the soldiers were at a loss, the army doctor developed a porridge that could be used as both medicine and food. The porridge was made from lotus seeds, lilies, Adenophora radix, Cixi, Polygonatum odoratum, Chinese yam, and Job's tears, which was processed into a paste and eaten. After taking it, people feel calm and energetic, and the army fights bravely again. Zhao Tuo said with emotion that eating it can clear away heat and replenish vital energy, and this thing can be called a refreshing and cooling food. In order to ensure combat effectiveness, Zhao Tuo ordered his subordinates to eat a bowl of clear soup every morning. After the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Zhao Tuo led an army to annex Guilin and Xiang counties, established the Nanyue Kingdom in the Lingnan region, and called himself "King Wu of Nanyue." The capital was established in Panyu, which is now Guangzhou. He reigned for 66 years and was truly a "long-lived man".
