Is it a problem if the adductor angle is too large?

A large inner hand muscle angle in a baby can lead to abnormal muscle tone and may also cause abnormal brain development, resulting in a certain gap in intelligence compared to normal babies. So does it matter if the adductor angle is too large? How do you determine whether the baby’s adductor angle is too large? Here I will introduce to you some relevant content about the adductor angle, including the normal value range of the adductor angle.

How to judge whether the baby's muscle tone is too high? At present, there is no instrument or equipment that can specifically quantify the level of muscle tone, but there are some methods to judge whether the muscle tone is at a normal level. The specific judgment method is as follows: 1. Adductor angle : Let the baby lie on his back during the inspection, hold the baby's knees to keep the lower limbs straight, then slowly spread the lower limbs to both sides as far as possible, and observe the angle between the two thighs. The angle changes with the baby's age. Normally, 40°-80° is the normal range for 1-3 months, 70°-110° is the normal range for 4-6 months, 100°-140° is the normal range for 7-9 months, and 130°-150° is the normal range for 10-12 months. If it exceeds the normal range, it is considered to be low muscle tone, and if it is below the normal range, it is considered to be high muscle tone.

2. Popliteal angle: When checking, let the baby lie on his back with his pelvis unable to be lifted, and bend it into chest-knee position. Then spread the calf and straighten it as much as possible. Observe the angle between the calf and thigh. The normal range is the same as the adductor angle, and there are relevant changes with the age of the baby. Normally, 80°-100° is within the normal range for 1-3 months, 90°-120° is within the normal range for 4-6 months, 110°-160° is within the normal range for 7-9 months, and 150°-170° is within the normal range for 10-12 months. If it exceeds the normal range, it is considered to be low muscle tone, and if it is below the normal range, it is considered to be high muscle tone.

3. Dorsiflexion angle of the foot: When checking, use your thumb to press against the sole of the baby's foot, hold the calf and heel with other fingers, and use the other hand to push the sole of the foot toward the calf. Observe the angle between the calf and the dorsum of the foot. For babies under 1 year old, the normal range is 60°-70°. If it is less than this range, the muscle tone is considered to be low, and if it is beyond this range, the muscle tone is considered to be high. Parents can complete these methods by themselves at home. Generally speaking, newborn babies will have high muscle tone, but it will gradually return to normal levels as they develop. Don't worry too much if high muscle tone is found during early examinations. For older babies, once any abnormality is detected, it is best to go to the pediatric or rehabilitation department of the hospital for a comprehensive examination in time, especially for those with high-risk factors for cerebral palsy (such as premature birth, dystocia, asphyxia, etc.). It is best to also do a brain MRI to check whether there are any abnormalities in the brain.
