Dark and rough skin on ankles

Dark and rough skin on ankles

When observing the skin on their ankles, people may find that the skin on their ankles is more prone to dryness, and compared to the skin on other parts of the body, the skin on the ankles may be darker. People may be concerned about this and hope to improve the skin on their ankles and make it as soft and clean as the skin on their hands. So what should you do if the skin on your ankles is dark and rough?

Eczema is an inflammatory skin disease and one of the most common dermatological diseases. It is characterized by severe itching and recurrent attacks. Classic eczema often has light yellow exudate, especially after scratching, and scabs will form after drying; but when it becomes chronic, repeated scratching will cause the skin to thicken, appearing rough, dry, and with darker texture. The causes of eczema are complex. The internal factors are mainly immune imbalance and destruction of skin barrier function. The external factors include dry and cold environment, excessive washing, contact with allergens or taking medications and health products, food additives, etc. After careful analysis, investigation and skin testing, the cause can be found in most patients.

Eczema can recur and affect the quality of life. A small number of patients will develop erythroderma, which can even be life-threatening. Through proper prevention and treatment, eczema is completely controllable. The key to treating eczema is to identify and eliminate the cause and prevent recurrence. Eczema patients should pay attention to the following in their daily life and treatment:

1. Eczema is not contagious. Eczema is not caused by unhygienic conditions. Instead, washing too frequently or taking a bath in very hot water will damage the skin barrier, inducing and aggravating the condition.

2. Persist in using moisturizers to prevent recurrence. After long-term observation, the Dermatology Department of Ruijin Hospital found that using moisturizers with skin barrier protection function after bathing can play an auxiliary role in treatment and significantly reduce recurrence.

3. Wear soft cotton underwear to avoid scratching and rubbing the skin.

4. The proportion of eczema patients allergic to cod was the highest, followed by egg yolk and egg white, then peanuts, soybeans, shrimp, crab, rice, wheat, chicken and milk. The incidence of allergies was relatively the lowest. Among the six allergic inhalers, dust mites had the highest allergy rate, followed by cockroaches, then green ants and cross-linked fungi, and the least common were mulberry, sycamore and sedge. But unless there is conclusive evidence, do not abstain from certain foods easily to avoid malnutrition.

5. Treatment should be reasonable with topical glucocorticoids, and do not be overly afraid of their side effects; in the acute attack accompanied by large amounts of exudation, small doses of hormones can be injected or taken orally for a short time to control acute inflammation. For eczema occurring on the face, non-hormonal products such as Weikaning or Yushiting, which are pure Chinese herbal formulas, are preferred and have significant effects. Narrowband ultraviolet radiation is also a very effective method, which can effectively control the disease and reduce the use of hormones. Severe eczema on the hands and feet can be treated with PUVA (ultraviolet irradiation after external application of photosensitizer) and semiconductor laser irradiation.

6. Carefully look for the cause. If the patient did not have eczema originally but developed it after suffering from hypertension and taking medication, it may be related to the calcium ion blockers in antihypertensive drugs. If eczema occurs after suffering from dermatophytosis (such as tinea manuum, pedis, onychomycosis, tinea corporis, etc.), especially in patients over 50 years old, it may be related to immune imbalance in the body.
