Ploughshare

Perennial herb. The taproot is short and thick, white. The leaves are clustered, oblong to triangular-ovate, 2-6 cm long, 1.5-4 cm wide, obtuse at the apex, cordate at the base, with blunt serrations on the margins, slightly purple on the underside, and slightly hairy or glabrous on both sides and on the petioles. The whole plant is used as medicine. The whole herb is collected during flowering period in summer and autumn and then sun-dried.

【Nature and flavor and meridians】 Bitter, slightly pungent, cold.

【Functions and indications】 Clears away heat and detoxifies, cools blood and reduces swelling. Used for acute conjunctivitis, pharyngitis, acute icteric hepatitis, mastitis, carbuncles, suppurative osteomyelitis, and snake bites.

[Usage and Dosage] 0.5-1 liang of dry product (1-2 liang of fresh product); use appropriate amount for external use, mash the fresh product and apply to the affected area.

【Note】 Do not drink hot water or eat hot food after taking the medicine.

[Remarks] For treating snake bites; take a handful of fresh herbaceous clover (if not available, use fresh Viola yedoensis), fresh smilax glabra, and fresh wild chrysanthemum leaves, wash them with cold boiled water, mash them and squeeze out about 150-200 ml of juice, take it orally at one time; add a small amount of cold boiled water to the remaining residue to moisten it, and apply it to the wound. If the condition is severe or the patient is weak, take the above dosage again after eight hours.

Other names include purple gold lock, purple flower yedoensis, small sweet water eggplant (Illustrated Catalogue of Plant Names and Realities), pimpleback grass (Nanjing Folk Medicinal Herbs), triangle grass, plow tip, iron grass (Jiangxi Folk Herbs), yedoensis grass, purple yedoensis (Zhejiang Folk Commonly Used Herbs).

Stipules are white, long pointed, with sparse linear teeth; petiole is 2-8 cm long, with narrow wings at the top. The pedicel is 6 to 12 cm long, with two linear bracts in the middle. The flowers are bisexual, with 5 calyxes, lanceolate, 5-7 mm long, and often with blunt teeth on the appendages; 5 petals, purple, obovate-elliptical, about 1.5 cm long, and about 7 mm long at the spur; 5 stamens; ovary superior, 1-chambered, with a triangular convex stigma. The capsule is oblong, with lobes with grooves, 6 to 10 mm long. Flowering period is April. Fruiting period is from May to August. It grows in the mountains and roadsides in sunny or semi-shaded places. Distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian, Taiwan and other places.

Selection

①Treatment of eczema: Crush the roots of eczema grass, add sugar or red pepper, mix and apply to the affected area; and surround it with flour. (Nanjing Folk Medicinal Herbs)

②For treating carbuncle, furuncle and unknown swelling: equal amounts of fresh herbaceous sedge and fresh wild chrysanthemum leaves. Mash them together and apply them to the affected area; or take the whole herb of fresh plowshare, add a little white sugar, and mash them and apply them, changing the herb once a day. At the same time, mash the juice into a wine glass and drink it orally. (Commonly used herbal medicines among Zhejiang folks)

③For the treatment of carbuncle, furuncle, scabies, mastitis and finger carbuncle: mash fresh plowshare grass and apply it; or dry it in the sun and grind it into powder, mix it with egg white and apply it, change it once or twice a day.

④Treat carbuncle: Grind the herb into powder, add rice paste to make pills as big as sycamore seeds, take nine pills each time with boiled water.

⑤ Treat postpartum blood stasis and pain like a knife stabbing in women: chop 100 grams of fresh plowshare grass, mix with 2 eggs, add oil and stir-fry, then add water and boil.

⑥ Treat snake bites: mash fresh plowshare grass and apply it to the affected area, changing it once or twice a day. (③The following prescriptions are from "Jiangxi Folk Herbs")

⑦Treatment of bleeding from trauma: Take appropriate amounts of Plowshare and Oxalis, mash them, apply them to the affected area, and apply pressure with gauze; or just mash Plowshare alone. (Jiangxi "Handbook of Herbal Medicine")
