What causes leg numbness and pain?

Numbness in the legs can be caused by many reasons, and mild cases can be treated as simple inflammatory reactions. But if the nerves are affected, it is not that simple. It is very likely to cause hemiplegia, which is not worth the loss. First consider whether there is inflammation, and then consider problems with the lumbar spine. The cause can be determined based on the straight leg raising test and the straight leg raising enhanced test.

Numbness in the limbs is mainly seen in the following diseases:

1. Thromboangiitis obliterans: Numbness of the limbs mainly presents as numbness and coldness in the lower limbs and pain in the limbs. The lesions start from the toes of the lower limbs and gradually spread to the feet and calves. The pain is worse when the foot is elevated and lessened when it is lowered. In severe cases, gangrene or ulcers may occur due to local heating, drug stimulation, etc.

2. Sequelae of stroke: numbness of the limbs accompanied by facial paralysis. Movement disorders of the affected side limbs may also be accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, headache, and dysphasia.

3. Bone hyperplasia: Numbness and pain in the limbs often occur in people over 40 years old, with segmental sensory impairment, soreness, weakness and soreness on the affected side.

4. Diabetes: soreness, numbness in the limbs and back pain. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, hunger, excessive eating, frequent urination, thirst and excessive drinking. Have a history of diabetes. Once numbness in the limbs occurs, you need to go to the hospital as soon as possible to find out the cause so that you can receive symptomatic treatment.

1. The femoral nerve comes from the 2nd to 4th lumbar nerves and is the largest branch of the lumbar plexus. Among the cutaneous branches of the femoral nerve, there is the longest saphenous nerve, which is distributed below the patella, on the anterior and medial side of the lower leg, to the medial edge of the foot.

2. The obturator nerve comes from the L2-4 nerves. Its endings are cutaneous branches, which are distributed in the skin on the inner side of the thigh, sometimes passing the knee to the inner side of the calf.

1. Hallux valgus

It is more common in middle-aged and elderly women. The main symptoms are toe pain when walking or standing, the tip of the big toe is obviously tilted towards the little toe, the metatarsal joints are swollen, and the local skin is thickened. This disease has certain genetic factors.

The method of prevention and treatment is to wear shoes with appropriate tightness. You can use a special small splint to fix the big toe when sleeping at night, and try to return the valgus big toe to the neutral position. When the condition is serious, surgical treatment is required.

2. Plantar pain

It is more common in elderly people who are weak and bedridden due to illness for a long time. It also often occurs in elderly people with flat feet. The cause of this disease is excessive physical weakness or long-term bed rest, which causes the ligaments that maintain the arch of the foot to gradually relax, making it impossible to maintain the shape of the arch of the foot, causing the metatarsal bones of the foot to sink and the muscles on the soles of the feet to become fatigued.
