Is a stye contagious?

We all know that stye is an eye disease, and this disease is relatively acute. It usually gives people the feeling that the eyes are very red and swollen, and it looks like after crying. Stye is also called sty. Some people think it is the same as pink eye, but it is not. So, is stye contagious?

"Stye", whose official medical name is stye, is a common acute eye inflammation with clinical symptoms of redness, swelling, heat and pain. This disease is mostly caused by endocrine disorders, excessive secretion of sebaceous glands, and rubbing the eyes with dry hands.

As a stubborn disease, stye is prone to recurrence and is often treated with antibiotic eye drops such as rifampicin or ofloxacin eye drops. If not treated properly, it will leave scars. A stye is like a pimple in the eye. When staphylococcus infects the eye, it causes inflammation and suppuration, thus forming a stye. So is sty contagious in daily life?

Experts point out that styes are not contagious. Although sometimes when one person in the family develops a stye, it is found that other family members will also develop it. This may be because the hygiene conditions at home are poor or because multiple people share a towel. Therefore, towels should be changed at least once every three months and steamed and disinfected frequently.

In addition, since there are many small pores on our eyelids that can only be seen when we rub our eyes with our hands, wipe our face with a towel, draw eyeliner with an eyebrow pencil, or take off and put on contact lenses, we may bring bacteria into these pores and invade the sebaceous glands or meibomian glands of the eyes, thereby causing styes. So if your bangs are too long, there is a high chance of getting bacteria into your eyes.

As for what many people say, "Styeca is caused by seeing things you shouldn't see" or "You will also get styeca if you look at someone who has styeca", these statements have no scientific basis. Unless someone with a stye touches your eyes with the hand that has touched his eyes, it is possible that the stye will be transmitted.
